May 12, 2026 - Another successful Egg Drop with some assistance from our friends from City of Bloomington, IN - Fire Department. 4th grade students were excited to see if their designs saved the egg. Several teams were able to keep their egg alive even from a 100 foot fall. Thanks for the invitation to join in the fun RBB Edgewood Schools.

May 11, 2026 - Children are often curious about fire. While curiosity is normal, there are things you can inform parents and caregivers about to prevent children from experimenting with fire.
Youth Firesetting motives may result from several factors, including curiosity, experimentation, a cry for help, thrill-seeking, willful intent to cause destruction, and mental or emotional disorders.
If you feel that your child is at a higher risk of experimenting with fire, contact your local fire department for help teaching your child about fire safety.

Vacant versus abandoned: What’s the difference?

Abandoned and vacant structures can be extremely treacherous to firefighters as they lack structural integrity and may contain other hazards.
Unoccupied buildings with an owner who is interested in the property and easily contacted are considered vacant. A vacant building usually has current taxes.
A property is considered abandoned if there is no owner or the landlord is absent. In addition, the building taxes are not paid, and the building is not legally occupied.
Buildings and homes can become vacant or abandoned for a multitude of reasons, including: destroyed in a disaster, foreclosure, failed business, or disinvestment by the owners. Unfortunately, these structures attract illicit activity, such as drug use, vandalism, and prostitution.
Abandoned property is the most striking indication of neighborhood decline. Large-scale abandonment threatens the stability of neighborhoods and undermines the value of investments made by other property owners.

The fire service can help communities reduce the occurrence of arson and reduce its devastating effects by making residents aware of the following measures to safeguard their church, mosque, synagogue, temple, or chapel.

Protect houses of worship

Illuminate building exterior and entrances. Place motion-activated lighting near entrances. Install lights to cover all sides of the building. Put interior lights on timers.

Install smoke alarms and a fire sprinkler system. The most effective fire loss prevention and reduction measure for both life and property is the installation and maintenance of fire sprinklers.

Keep windows locked. Use window hardware with spring-loaded bolts that insert through the window frame into the wall frame.

Keep doors locked. Equip external doors with code-compliant hardware and secure them when the facility isn't occupied. Limit and track which members of the congregation have keys and alarm codes.

Clean inside to remove unneeded paper, trash, cleaning supplies, paint cans and other materials that could fuel a fire for an arsonist.

Clean-up day

Many of the risks, hazards, and safety concerns identified during fire safety and security activities can be fixed during a clean-up day at a house of worship. Specific tasks include trimming trees and shrubbery, cleaning windows, and removing all possible items that can start a fire, like flammable liquids, things that can burn, and trash.
