REMINDER: Wisconsin’s Move Over Law recently expanded to include disabled vehicles. Motorists are required to move out of the lane closest to emergency and disabled vehicles that are stopped along the highway. If you can’t move over, slow down.

Disabled vehicles must have:
✅Hazard lights on, or
✅Emergency devices or flares placed near the vehicle, or
✅One or more persons attending to the vehicle and visible to motorists

The law is in place to add protection to roadside workers and now, other motorists. https://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/statutes/statutes/346/II/072

Having photographs or videos of your home and possessions can serve as critical documentation to back up insurance claims. Include the contents of drawers and closets as well as jewelry and other valuables--the more thorough the better. Make sure you upload photos or videos to the cloud so they are safe and always available to you.

Grant County will conduct warning siren testing in all municipalities on Monday. In some areas, this will consist of a brief “growl” test, where the siren is activated and then quickly silenced. In other communities, the tests will run for a full siren cycle.

These tests are part of the transition to our new countywide radio system and are being conducted to confirm that all equipment is operating reliably and as designed.

These tests are NOT a part of Wisconsin's statewide tornado drill, which will take place on Thursday, April 16th (stay tuned for more outreach on that!)

STAY SAFE: If you have a student who will be taking the school bus, teach them the SAFE acronym:

S: Stay at least five giant steps away from the curb.
A: Always wait until the bus comes to a stop and the door opens before approaching.
F: Face forward after finding a seat to avoid distracting the bus driver.
E: Exit the bus and look left, right, and left again for vehicles and follow instructions of bus drivers before crossing the road. Make sure the bus driver can see you by staying at least 10 feet in front of the bus. If you drop something near the bus, alert the driver instead of retrieving it.

Don’t forget to arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes early!

KNOW THE DIFFERENCE: School buses will be active around the state next week. Here’s a reminder on what the different colored lights on a school bus indicate and what you should do if they’re flashing:

🟠 Amber Warning Lights: The school bus is about to stop. Slow down and prepare to stop.

🔴Red Warning Lights: Stop at least 20 feet from the bus whether approaching from either direction. The only exception is if you are traveling on the other side of a divided road that’s separated by a median or other physical barrier.

School zones can be chaotic. Students, parents, teen drivers, crossing guards, bicyclists, buses, and a lot of traffic can cause dangerous situations. Here are some reminders for motorists and students navigating school zones:

Drivers:

🚗 Adhere to speed limits
👀 Scan the road, watch for students
🙂 Stay patient
🚸 Follow instructions of crossing guards
⬆️ ⬇️ Buckle Up Phone Down

Pedestrians:

🚶‍♀️ Stay on sidewalks and use crosswalks
👀 Look both ways before crossing roads

Caregivers of teen drivers:

👨‍👩‍👦 Talk with your kids about the importance of safe driving when entering and exiting school parking lots
