City of Bloomington, IN - Commission on the Status of Black Males The Commission on the Status of Black Males is sponsored by the Community and Family Resources Department of the City of Bloomington.

The purposes and duties of the Commission on the Status of Black Males include:
- To develop action committees addressing problems of Black males in the areas of Education, Health, Criminal Justice and Employment;
- To serve as a catalyst to promote positive public and private remedies to the multi-faceted problems confronting Black males in our community and the resulting effects on the entire co

mmunity;
- To organize and convene community forums and neighborhood-based focus groups to discuss the status of Black males;
- To network with groups with similar missions, such as the Indiana Commission on the Social Status of Black Males, the African American National Council, and local commissions throughout the state, sharing ideas, information, data and plans.

Registration for the 2026 Black Male Youth Summit is now open.

The City of Bloomington, IN - Commission on the Status of Black Males invites young men of all backgrounds to register for the 2026 Black Male Youth Summit. The Summit will take place on Thursday, September 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Bloomington's City Hall.

The theme for this year's Summit is “Building the Blueprint: Architecting Our Future,” where we seek to acknowledge, honor, teach, and equip the male youth in our city to lay a strong foundation for their success. The Summit is free to attend, but pre-registration is required. Although focused on African American and Latino middle and high school-aged male-identifying students, all are welcome to attend.

The Bloomington City Council, in partnership with the Community Justice & Mediation Center (CJAM) as facilitators, invites community members to participate in two public deliberations about safety in Bloomington, September 9 and October 21. The first session will inform the Council about how residents think
about public safety and what their experiences are, good and bad, in this area. The second session will be a discussion of public safety priorities and how city government can improve public safety for all.

The City of Bloomington, IN - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission and the Commission on the Status of Black Males will be set up at the Umoja Day Block Party on Saturday, August 29, from Noon to 3 p.m. at the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center.

The Commission on the Status of Black Males would like to thank everyone who came out to support the Million Father March at Fairview Elementary School to welcome students back! Seeing fathers, grandfathers, uncles, mentors, and community leaders showing up for our children sends a powerful message that they are supported, valued, and never alone on their educational journey.

Thank you for sharing your positive energy and helping Bloomington's students start the school year with unity and purpose. Together, we're building a stronger Bloomington and creating a brighter future for every student.
