Community Update: Fox with Mange

Bloomington Animal Care and Control is aware of community concerns regarding a fox with mange that has been seen in the Bloomington area. We want to assure the public that Animal Control, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and a licensed wildlife rehabber are working together on this case, and the fox is currently being treated.

Mange is unfortunately fairly common in Indiana wildlife, particularly foxes and coyotes. According to Indiana DNR, biologists estimate that approximately 1 in 10 foxes may have mange. While severe cases can be fatal, wildlife can also recover, particularly during warmer months when hair loss poses less of a risk from exposure.

For residents who see a fox or coyote with mange in their neighborhood, DNR recommends:
Keep pets away from the affected animal and any known den areas. Dogs can contract the same type of mange through prolonged contact with an infected animal or its den.
Bring outdoor pet beds, food bowls and water bowls inside when possible.
Remove outdoor pet food, including food left for community cats, temporarily if an affected fox is frequenting the area. This can help discourage the animal from remaining near homes.
Do not attempt to approach, capture, medicate or treat wildlife yourself. Some medications used to treat mange can be dangerous to other wildlife and domestic animals.

Please give the fox space and allow the professionals involved to continue its treatment and monitoring.

We appreciate everyone who has reported sightings and expressed concern for this animal. We are grateful to Indiana DNR and our friends in wildlife rehabilitation for working alongside our Animal Control officers to give this fox the best opportunity for recovery.

We need your help!

But first, let's talk about the correct process for bringing in an injured, orphaned, or ill animal so that we can take appropriate steps to ensure animal welfare, safety, and adhere to state and federal guidelines for wildlife rehabilitation and release.

If you have located an animal in need, please call 812-323-1313 and select the prompt pertaining to the situation and species you have encountered. Our staff will respond back to you as quickly as they can and walk you through options and/or bringing the animal in for intake at our facility. It is important to keep in mind that our staff are also caring for the animal patients already actively in our care during this time and to please be patient. We will return your call.

Now, this guy. Unfortunately, he was dropped off at our center where the finder would or could not provide additional information, and left without returning this turtle back to its home habitat. Since he is not injured or ill, we need to get him back to his home. Turtles stay within a 1 mile (or less!) radius home base their entire lives so it is crucial that we get them back to exactly where they came from.

What we do know is that he was picked up on Hartstrait Road in Bloomington or Ellettsville on Tuesday, 8/4, just before 10am by someone in a newer blue pick-up truck. We just need to know exactly where he was picked up from so that we can return him to that spot. If you happened to see something matching this description, please let us know as soon as possible!

* Note, this individual is not in trouble, and does not need to be identified. We just need to know where the turtle was picked up from. Thank you!!

We are still accepting TEEN WildCamp registrations!

This year we’ll offer weekend camp for teens ages 14–17 in July. Campers will explore native Indiana wildlife, biology, and conservation, and discover how we can all work together to help our local ecosystems thrive. There will be extra special presentations about identifying native plants as well as veterinary and rehabber career paths for this age group!

Our very own Wood Duck ambassador, River, got to reunite with one of her very first caretaker’s while visiting and Exotic Animal Clinic of Indianapolis!

A reunion for the ages! 🦆
When River, a resident education animal with WildCare INC, came to see us for a wellness visit, she was able to be reunited with her former caretaker, Dr. Matt!
It was such a surprise for Dr. Matt who was very happy to hear that River is doing well!
We were able to find a picture of Dr. Matt during her time at WildCare with River and get an updated picture of them together! River has been an education animal for about 14 years now after being found alone outside as a hatchling.
It was so special to see old friends reunite again. 💕
