Willed to the City of Bloomington by James Trotter, a prominent Irish businessman, and dedicated to his family, the Trotter Fountain was designed by famous American sculptor, Lorado Taft. The Trotters included popular 3 term mayor and successful businessman John and his business partner and sister Georgina - a Civil War nurse, the first female President of the Board of Education, a "veritable ste

am engine of energy", and an early proponent of women's rights. Georgina also had a huge rule in raising the money to start Bloomington's first public library. Lorado Taft (April 29, 1860 – October 30, 1936), was an American sculptor, writer and educator. Taft earned his bachelor's degree (1879) and master's degree (1880) from the University of Illinois then studied sculpture in Paris at the prestigious Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He taught at the Art Institute until 1929. Among other honors, Taft's accomplishments were recognized by his election to the National Institute of Arts and Letters (now known as the American Academy of Arts and Letters). He was active until the end of his life.
