June is Adpot-a-Cat Month and we have Independent Contractors looking for employment!

Not every cat dreams of being a couch cat and that’s okay.

Right now, we have more Working Cats available than ever before. We are currently caring for 16 working cats in need of placement, and we urgently need safe homes and properties where they can thrive.

Working Cats are cats who do best with space, independence, and a job to do. Many are not comfortable living as traditional indoor pets, but they still deserve safety, care, and a place to belong.

These cats are happiest in places like:
• Barns
• Garages
• Warehouses
• Workshops
• Stables
• Outdoor shops or properties

Working Cats provide natural rodent control while living safely on your property with food, water, shelter, and care from you.

Every Working Cat is different:
• Some are very feral and prefer little to no human interaction
• Some are shy but warm up over time
• Some enjoy companionship on their own terms
• Many bond strongly with their environment and routine

Unlike social domestic cats who seek indoor family life and frequent affection, Working Cats value independence and space. They are not “bad” cats, they simply have different social needs and personalities.

Our Working Cats are:
• Spayed/neutered
• Vaccinated
• Ready to get to work

If you have a barn, business, garage, stable, or property needing expert pest control and a little feline attitude, one of our independent contractors may be the perfect fit.

Laundry SOS at the Shelter

Our trusty dryer has decided to take an unscheduled vacation for repairs, and meanwhile the blankets, towels, and puppy bedding are multiplying faster than kittens in spring.

If anyone has a working electric dryer they’d be willing to donate to the shelter, you would officially become our Laundry Hero. Right now we’re one load away from being buried alive in bedding.

Every clean blanket means a cozy animal, and we’d be so grateful for the help while our machine gets fixed.

Please reach out if you are able to help us with this hefty request! 812-349-3492 or [email protected]

Since October of 2025, Red has been waiting for her forever family.

Shelter life has been hard on this sweet girl, but outside the kennel, Red absolutely shines. She LOVES playing fetch, zooming around the yard, and doing the cutest little happy hops when she gets excited. Watching her gleefully bop around with a toy in her mouth is enough to make anyone smile.

Red came to us extremely underweight while with 10 newborn puppies. Despite everything she had been through, she remained incredibly loving and gentle with people.

Her former foster described her as affectionate, cuddly, and convinced she is a lap dog. Red especially adores children and has done wonderfully with school-age kids. She loves being close to her people, going on walks, meeting visitors, and soaking up attention.

She is also extremely well house-trained, knows commands like sit, shake, and stay, and does a great job letting her people know when she needs to go outside.

Red would prefer to be the only pet in the home so she can soak up all the love for herself.

After so many months waiting, we would love nothing more than to see Red finally leave shelter life behind and head home with a family of her own.

Please help us celebrate S.W.A.G.G.E.R. Award winner, Claire!

Claire has been an incredible volunteer with the Bloomington Animal Shelter since 2023. Alongside her mother, Kara, she has dedicated countless hours to caring for our adoptable cats each Sunday morning while also fostering cats and kittens in need. Claire has also served as a Canine Steward, helping potential adopters connect with shelter dogs, and earlier this year joined our Volunteer Department as an intern, where she has become an invaluable support across the shelter.

What makes Claire truly special is the compassion and kindness she brings to every interaction. Whether helping a nervous dog feel safe, sitting quietly with a stressed cat, assisting visitors, or supporting staff, Claire consistently goes above and beyond to make both people and animals feel cared for and welcomed.

She is thoughtful, dependable, adaptable, and deeply compassionate, and we are so lucky to have her as part of our shelter team.

Claire will be recognized at the 2026 S.W.A.G.G.E.R. Awards on May 27, honoring Students Who Act Generously, Grow, and Earn Respect. We could not think of someone more deserving of this recognition. Congratulations, Claire!

Hey Bloomington Fam!

We are running low on bedding and could really use your help keeping our shelter animals cozy and comfortable. We are especially in need of blankets, comforters, quilts, and towels.

We are urgently searching for a foster home for a very special dog named Elko.

About a month and a half ago, we began receiving reports of a dog wandering the south side of town near South High School. Day after day, community members spotted him running scared, surviving on his own, never quite letting anyone get close enough to help.

With an incredible amount of patience, teamwork, and community support, we were finally able to safely and humanely trap him. That dog is now Elko.

Since arriving at the shelter, Elko has been safe, warm, fed, and loved. But despite our efforts, shelter life is still incredibly hard for him. Elko is nervous and frightened of just about everything. (But bonus, he loves snacks!) The world has clearly not been very kind to this boy, yet he remains gentle, sweet, and so deserving of compassion.

What Elko truly needs now is a quiet home and a patient person willing to help him learn that he is finally safe.

Unfortunately, summer is one of the hardest times for our foster program. Many of our regular fosters are traveling or unavailable, and we are quickly running out of options for dogs like Elko who are struggling in the shelter environment.

We are specifically looking for someone with experience handling nervous or shut down dogs who can offer Elko a calm, safe place to decompress and slowly build confidence. Even temporary fostering could completely change the course of his life.

If you think you may be able to help Elko, please contact Shelter Manager Robyn at [email protected].

More information about our foster program can be found at:

Please help us find this boy the safe landing spot he so desperately needs.
