❗️We are hiring! Here are some of our most frequently asked questions:

We are hiring for the position of Deputy Sheriff. We accept applications year-round , but this current hiring process is open until 6/30/25. Applicants do not need to have any law enforcement experience to apply, but experienced applicants are welcome.

Applicants must be 21 years old at the time of appointment to the position.

Pay and Benefits:

The starting pay for all applicants regardless of experience is $72,780 per year, or $34.99 per hour. After the first year of employment, the pay goes up to $75,151 or $36.13 per hour.

3 day weekends ( 6 days on, 3 days off)
37 total paid days off (after 1st year, including 10 vacation days, 15 floating holidays, and 12 personal days), with additional vacation days earned throughout your career.
Take home cars with off-duty use in counties that surround Monroe County.
Education pay; Associates $500, Bachelor's $2,000, Master's $2,500 / year.
Specialty Unit Pay up to $1,000 / year ( some options include Bike Team, Drone Team, Dive Team, CIRT Team, Hostage Negotiator, Crash Reconstructionist, Drug Recognition Expert)
Education Pay up to $2,500/ year
Instructor Pay $500/ year
Field Training Officer $1,000/ year
Shift Differential $1,800/ year for 2nd shift, $2,000/ year for 3rd shift
Uniform allowance $1,600/ year
Off-duty employment opportunities
County Health Clinic access

Hiring Process:

This is a competitive process. All parts of the testing must be passed successfully or the applicant will be disqualified from the process.

Applicants will be required to pass a physical fitness test. It is the ILEA (Indiana Law Enforcement Academy) Exit standards, which can be found here : https://www.in.gov/ilea/physical-fitness-standards/

After passing that, the applicant will take a standardized written examination that tests a variety of subjects such as attention to detail, reading comprehension, grammar, basic math, memory, and location orientation.

After passing that, the applicant will be given some time to change and prepare for the panel interview. This is a formal interview with several senior members of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

The fitness test, the written test and the interviews will be all scheduled on the same day, most likely on a weekend.

After passing all steps up to this point, the applicant will go through a thorough background investigation, polygraph examination, and Merit Board interview, psychological evaluation, and medical evaluation.

Indiana Law Enforcement Academy:

New recruits will be required successfully complete the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy within their first year of employment. This is an 18-week residential academy that runs Monday through Thursday most weeks, with some weeks going until Friday. Recruits will be paid the rate of $72,780 during the academy.

Deputies receive $1,600 each year in uniform allowance and will be given most equipment needed for the academy.

What is our hiring process like❓

One of the questions we often get asked is what our hiring process consists of, so here's a sneak peak at what to expect if you decide to apply to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office! Do you have what it takes?

The physical fitness test, written exam, and panel interview will likely be scheduled for the same day. After passing the panel interview, applicants will move on to the background investigation phase, polygraph, Merit Board interview, and psych test.

*Lateral applicants will be able to skip the physical fitness portion of the testing, and do not have to attend ILEA ( Indiana Law Enforcement Academy).

1) Fitness Test:

The Physical fitness test is ILEA exit standards:
16 inch vertical jump
25 pushups, no time limit
29 sit-ups - one minute
300 meter sprint in 71 seconds
1.5 mile run in 16:28.

2) Written Exam:

The written exam will cover basic topics such as reading comprehension, memory, attention to detail, location orientation, basic grammar and basic math.

3) Panel Interview:

The panel interview will be with members of our command staff and our FTO (Field training officer) Coordinator.

4) Background Investigation:

The background investigation will be a thorough investigation into your life, including criminal history, employment history, credit history, residency history, and much more. This is to ensure that each deputy we select is of the utmost honesty, integrity, and character.

Honesty is key! Minor background blemishes can be acceptable, but dishonesty is always an automatic disqualifier. Background investigators will be verifying everything you put on your background questionnaire.

Felony convictions and some misdemeanors are automatic disqualifiers. History of hard drug use is an automatic disqualifier. The applicant cannot have used ma*****na within the past year.

The applicant must not have an unreasonable history of excessive traffic citations.

5) Polygraph:

The polygraph examination, AKA the lie detector, is yet another tool to ensure honesty and integrity of our applicants, and will be used to verify everything discovered in the background investigation and more. Our polygraph guy is really good, so don't try to cheat it!

6) Merit Board Interview:

After the polygraph, applicants will move on to the Merit Board Interview. The Merit Board consists of members of the community tasked with oversight of the Sheriff's Office from an outside perspective.

7) Psych Evaluation:

Finally, the applicant will go through the psych evaluation. This is to ensure that our deputies are of sound mind and a good fit for law enforcement life.

8 ) Medical exam:

After passing all phases, the applicant will have a medical evaluation to ensure they are fit for duty.

9) Indiana Law Enforcement Academy:

Once hired, the recruit will be required to successfully complete the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy within the first year of employment. The academy is an 18 week live-in academy consisting of classroom instruction, fi****ms training, Emergency Vehicle Operations training, Physical Tactics, and much more. Recruits will have weekends off, and can go home to their families.

10: Field Training (FTO):

After passing the academy, recruits will go through an approximately 4 month Field Training process. This consists of 4 phases of on the job training with a seasoned deputy.

Congratulations! You've made it through, and are now a full fledged Deputy Sheriff.

❗️2025 salary is as follows:

New recruit with no experience- $72,780
1-year $75,151
3-year $79,103
8-year $82,264
14-year $85,426
20-year $87, 797
25-year $90,168.

Lateral recruits can start at up to $82,264 based on years of experience.

Each year, deputies will get a total of 38 paid days off.

That's:
16 floating holidays
10 vacation days
12 personal days (1 earned each month)
and plenty of comp time and overtime opportunities.

Deputies earn more yearly vacation days as their time with the county increases.

Plus:
Yearly Education pay ($1,500 for associates, $2,000 for Bachelor, $2,500 for Master's)
Instructor pay
Specialty unit pay (Drone, SWAT, Bike Patrol, Crash Reconstructionist and more)

We work 8.25 hour shifts, with a 6 days on, 3 days off schedule. Recruits will be expected to work nights, weekends and holidays.

We allow beards and tattoos! Beards must be kept short and neat, and tattoos cannot be on the neck, face, or hands.

All deputies get take-home cars that can be used in surrounding counties after successfully passing field training.

New recruits will be required to attend and successfully complete the 18 week Indiana Law Enforcement Academy within the first year of employment.
