June is Draft Syndorme Awareness Month.
Dravet syndrome is a serious form of epilepsy that starts in infancy and gets more complex over time, affecting a person throughout their life.
Early signs include:
* Seizures usually begin between 2 and 15 months old
* Seizures can happen with or without a fever and are often long
* Common early seizures affect one side of the body or the whole body
As the child grows (around ages 1–5), more seizure types may appear, such as:
* Sudden jerking movements (myoclonic seizures)
* Periods of staring or reduced awareness
* Sudden loss of muscle tone (dropping)
* Seizures during sleep or in clusters
Other important points:
* Triggers can include fever, illness, vaccinations, flashing lights, hot baths, or overexertion
* Development may seem normal at first, but delays often appear between 1 and 5 years of age
* Early brain scans and EEG tests often look normal
