Blowing Rock Police Sergeant, Hayes (right), was awarded his Tactical Patrol Officer certification from the North Carolina Justice Academy recently.

The NCJA program provides the individual officer the opportunity to develop a solid foundation of tactical training and expertise. Officers who complete this program will acquire the skills and principles necessary for promoting their personal safety and professional development, enabling them to become more proficient as tactical/patrol officers.

To achieve this certification, officers are required to complete 400 hours of training within ten years. Sergeant Hayes was able to accomplish this task in under five years.

We are very fortunate to have Officer's like Sgt. Hayes that invest in their careers through training and application, not only make themselves the best they can be but to better serve our community.

Traffic stop leads to arrest for felony drug charges.

On May 15, Blowing Rock Officers conducted a traffic stop under the suspicion that the driver of the vehicle had a suspended driver's license. A probable cause search was done on the vehicle.

Robert Dale Billings, 49, of Jefferson was arrested for the following:

• Felony possession of methamphetamine
• Possession of a schedule III controlled substance (Buprenorphine)
• Possession of a schedule IV substance (Alprazolam/Xanax)
• Possession of drug paraphernalia
• Driving while license revoked

Due to other unrelated pending charges Mr. Billings was given no bond. Blowing Rock Police is also working with the Watauga County District Attorney’s Office in regard to adding a habitual felon charge.

This is great example of proactive traffic enforcement leading to criminal apprehension.

Beautiful weather this weekend. Couple of our officers got some foot patrols on Main St. and Memorial Park. It always amazes us the number of visitors that say their hometown police do not do that.

We would like to take a moment and thank Officer Mast. Officer Mast just finished up 8 years of service in the Army National Guard. BRPD presented him a Benchmade knife with his years of Army service custom engraved on it, as a token of thanks for his service. We are glad he continues to serve with the Blowing Rock Police Department. (Pictured left is Lt. Hunt and right Officer Mast)

Had an absolute blast with our annual Blowing Rock Elementary town operations fest today. K-2nd got to explore and ask questions to each of the town departments.
