Within the framework of our "Complete Streets" initiatives, all new construction projects necessitate the replacement of sidewalks and infrastructure up to the street boundary, in accordance with our streetscaping template. As mentioned previously, although we cannot determine the type of private business that develops on private property, the city exercises control over construction materials, aesthetics, and zoning regulations, as specified in our use tables. This project in particular is taking into consideration pedestrian use enlarging the walkways, limiting access on 123rd, and even installing a gate to be closed off during busy school crossing times.

Public Hearing regarding streetscape improvements along Western Avenue from 119th to 127th.

The City of Blue Island is spearheading improvements to the Western Avenue corridor from 119th Street to 127th Street. We invite City residents, businesses, and all others that use Western Avenue to attend the Public Information Meeting. The meeting will be open house format, so please join us anytime on July 1 between 4:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. at City Hall's East Annex: 2434 Vermont Street. We will share project details in depth, discuss benefits, answer questions, and take comments.

Improvements to the Western Avenue corridor from 119th Street to 127th Street include replacing concrete sidewalks, corner crossings, driveways, curb and gutter, and lighting. Other improvements include parking updates and new bumpouts, crosswalks, parkway trees, and resurfacing of the roadway.

A new brick building, nearing completion at 126th & Western, is set to become a Caliber Collision office and shop, replacing their existing, aesthetically unpleasing facility. This project, along with others, highlights the city's role in providing recommendations on aesthetic elements, such as brick and stone construction, to better align with our city's historical architecture. While we cannot determine the type of businesses that locate within our city, we can offer recommendations based on our zoning code.
