Update on traffic study: The civil engineer went out and looked at the site. He foiled the state for three things: 1- accident history 2- any studies that have been done there by the state and 3-if the site meets criteria for a traffic light. He is awaiting those reports and then he will draft up his findings and show us, then recommend how to proceed

Friends and neighbors,
It has come to our attention that many of you are not pleased with the traffic study and feel it is not fair to the community based on the reality that we all experience on Bayview Ave. It is because of this that we have decided it's time to use the funds that we collected to have our own traffic study done. We have hired a reputable engineer that can give us some direction going forward. We hear you and we see you.

Friends and neighbors,

We trust by now everyone has had a chance to review the revised plan for the properties 7 and 9 Bayview Avenue. The new proposal includes 16 for sale homes surrounding the historic house built on the 9 Bayview lot. There will be 28 parking spaces. It is the builder’s stated intention that the house will be donated to The East Islip Historical Society. Given this remains the plan, in addition to the house and its front lawn remaining, a few of the larger trees will be spared. The architect who is designing the properties is Ross Chapin who is known for his "pocket neighborhoods" - https://rosschapin.com/projects/pocket-neighborhoods.

After much thought and deliberation, this coalition has come to the conclusion that this is as far as we can, or should take this fight with the current circumstances. In order to continue, we would need to raise another 25k with Covid active and that would give us no guarantees to a win. In fact, we believe it would be a losing battle that borders on irresponsible with times this tough.

As an informal group of volunteers, we have spent time meeting with potential professionals to hire (attorney and traffic engineer), meeting with other professionals who also have pursued opposition to a change of zone plan, the community, and each other. We have spearheaded fundraising. We have listened and spoken loudly in opposition to the original plan of two-story rental apartments. The compromise offered by the builder is significantly different than his original proposition.

Moving forward, we certainly will not discourage anyone else who would like to step up to the challenge and take this on for themselves. If no other person or persons should come forward to proceed then we would like to get the community's input on how the existing funds that we have collected should be used. It is our opinion that The East Islip Historical Society could use the funds in a way that would serve the community. We are of course open and welcome to any of your suggestions.

Friends, neighbors, and allies,
As you know by now we are raising money for our experts so we can fight the good fight and keep our beautiful neighborhood intact. The overdevelopment that has happened in our surrounding areas can not and will not happen here in East Islip. Enough is enough. We have gotten a proper quote from our lawyer and to win this we are going to need about 20k. We intend on beginning the planning for our major fundraisers but until that time we are asking you to donate since paying the retainer will clear our account. Thank you and please message us or comment if you have any questions or resources we can pull from. Methods of financial contribution enclosed:
1. Venmo funds:
2. Message Darren Danowski and purchase a $20 yard sign: https://www.facebook.com/darren.danowski

In regards to the meeting scheduled for today, March 4th we are not on the schedule. It’s wonderful if you want to make an appearance, if folks want to organize. We should all understand that people lead demanding lives though and clearly this won’t be the last opportunity to show up. We see this as a long game at this point and plan to stay vigilant but not exhaust you good people at the beginning of what could be a long fight. Keep an eye on the schedule with us and we will post any movement that we can confirm. In the mean time keep pushing those letters, signs, and adding people to the conversation. T-shirts will be available soon. Everyone has done such great work that we have delayed this already far beyond what it would have been

An Overview - The 29 Unit Apartment Complex - Rezone

East Islip is a unique hamlet where your neighbor is often your best friend from high school. It’s a community where our children return to buy their first house and raise their family. It’s a community where one persons heartache becomes a neighborhood’s concern. It’s a place where our local charities were born out of need and, because of that, they are supported by all. Our community values are anchored in words like family, friendship, integrity, gratitude, respect, pride, and strength. This is a community that will fight for what is right and we will not lose.

On January 22, 2020 Larry Gargano, President of Greenview Properties, sent a letter to property owners who are local and adjacent to 7 & 9 Bayview Avenue, East Islip, informing of his intentions to build a 29 unit, 55+ senior apartment complex on the two parcels. Greenview Properties is notorious for building large apartment complexes in our area. In fact, he is currently building the apartments at Westbrook Fields (adjacent to our little league fields) and he also owns the 55+ apartment complex on Connetquot Ave called Providence on the Park, as well as several other apartment complexes in our town of Islip. Larry needs the town to approve a rezone of these properties from Residential A to Residential C before he can build the apartments.

Our community is open to change and open to economic development and we’ve proven that with the current building developments in our area. However, this rezone is crossing the line. Larry is asking our town to approve a rezone in an area that has always been exclusively single family homes. The rezone will change our community forever. It’s a change that will inundate our family valued neighborhoods with unnecessary high occupancy apartments. It will flood our already busy streets with more traffic. It will change the face of our community in a way that will drive away the opportunity for our children to raise their children as we raised them.

East Islip knows how to fight for what is right and Larry will have a fight on his hands. He is driven by money and we are driven by core family values. Please read on about how you can help to fight the rezone of 7 &9 Bayview Ave. Once the precedence is set, guys like Larry can buy the houses next to you and turn them into a apartment complexes. Just look at what happened to Clinton Ave in Bay Shore, a historic neighborhood which leads to the Marina (sound familiar).
