We are excited to share that the Northeastern Mycological Federation (NEMF) has selected Happel's Meadow Wetland Preserve as one of the foray locations for their 2026 annual foray in Mont Alto!

Each year, NEMF brings together professional, academic, and citizen mycologists, along with mushroom enthusiasts from across the Northeast, to explore local forests, document fungal diversity, attend educational talks and workshops, enjoy mushroom tastings, and share their passion for fungi.

We are honored to welcome this incredible group to the meadow and can't wait to see what fungal treasures they uncover. Happel's Meadow's mix of wetlands, woodlands, and diverse habitats makes it a fascinating place to explore, and we're eager to learn from the discoveries made during their visit.

Wow, what a difference! A couple of volunteers spent some time this morning clearing invasive plants and picking up trash along the roadside. Beneath the tangle of privet, honeysuckle, and mulberry, we discovered several native plants that had been struggling to survive. With a little breathing room and some sunlight, they now have a much better chance to thrive instead of being smothered by invasives.

Mountain Laurel season has arrived at Happel’s Meadow Wetland Preserve!

Our freshly cleared trail is beginning to come alive with the soft pink and white blooms. Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latifolia) is Pennsylvania’s state flower and one of the few evergreen shrubs native to our state. While unusual within a wetland landscape, the Mountain Laurel at Happel’s Meadow can be found lining the trails along the rocky, acidic upland areas that border the wetland.

Their blooms only last for a short time each year, making this one of Spring's special moments to slow down for. Come take a stroll through the meadow and enjoy these beautiful native shrubs as they begin putting on their annual show!

A huge thank you to those who came out for the Happel’s Meadow Wetland Preserve cleanup day! With a lot of hard work and dedication made a noticeable difference in just a few hours.

Our focus was clearing trails and tackling invasive species throughout the preserve. Volunteers pulled piles of Japanese spirea, wineberry, garlic mustard, and barberry, helping give native plants more room to thrive. We also removed a large amount of downed branches and debris that had been smothering some of the preserve’s beautiful rosebay rhododendrons.

It’s amazing what a few hours of teamwork can accomplish. Every branch moved, every invasive plant pulled, and every helping hand played a role in caring for this unique wetland preserve.
