Missouri AT provides support to assistive technology demonstration programs. The programs allow individuals with disabilities, their family members, and the professionals that support them; the opportunity to learn about and try out different devices, enabling them to make an informed choice about the equipment that best meets the individual’s needs. The type of devices available for a demonstration varies widely from site to site. Please contact the individual program locations to determine what types of assistive technology are available. Missouri AT Durable Medical Equipment Recycling Program provides low-cost, recycled walkers, crutches, canes, commodes, shower chairs, manual and power wheelchairs, positioning equipment, and miscellaneous wheelchair parts, i.e. tires, cushions, armrests, footplates. Simple tools can make a big difference when it comes to time management. Chore charts can help with keeping track of responsibilities, while a handwashing timer can help you avoid washing too much or too little. Another helpful option is the Time Timer clock. This clock has a disc that slowly disappears as the minutes count down, providing a stronger visualization of time. Lastly, apps such as the First Then Visual Schedule can provide visual and audible descriptions of what to do next.

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, we’re highlighting a few types of assistive technology that can promote mental wellness.

Mental health apps—these apps can guide you through deep breathing exercises, help you practice mindfulness, connect you to online therapists, and more.

Sensory items—items such as fidget spinners, weighted blankets, and foam balls can ease stress and help with sensory regulation.

Smartwatches—these watches can help you keep track of your mental health by monitoring your heart rate and sleeping patterns.

Mood journals—these journals, whether digital or physical, can help with expressing emotions and identifying patterns.

Noise-cancelling headphones—these headphones can help reduce stress and improve focus by blocking out background noise.

Robotic pets—robotic pets can provide comfort and companionship without the stress that can come with owning an animal.

To learn about more AT options for mental health, visit at.mo.gov or call (816) 655-6700.

Learning how to use a computer can be challenging, especially for older adults who are visually impaired. That’s where the Technology Association for Visually Impaired Missourians (TAVIM) comes in. TAVIM offers free computer training to visually impaired Missourians ages 55 and older. TAVIM can also provide free refurbished computers to qualifying program participants.

TAVIM offers training for both general computer use and the use of accessible computer software, such as JAWS. TAVIM also currently provides training for the BlindShell phone.
