FACT CHECK FRIDAY: The Missouri First Maps Keep Missouri Values in DC

Some claim the Missouri First Map is unfair. But the truth is it divides fewer counties (5 vs. 9) and fewer cities/municipalities (13 vs. 31) than the 2022 map, while also scoring better on compactness metrics.

Vote YES on Prop A to keep Missouri values represented in DC.

In Jefferson City, I work every day to ensure Independence, Sugar Creek, and Jackson County receive our fair share of state investment and hold utility companies accountable. Real progress happens when state agencies, local leaders, and the community work together to deliver results for people who live and work here.

Here are a few major infrastructure and utility investments we’ve delivered for District 20:

Reducing Utility Outages & Protecting Customers: As a member of the House Utilities Committee, I supported legislation strengthening protections for underground utilities to prevent dangerous service interruptions and costly damage during excavation.

Back home, I helped connect Sugar Creek leadership with Evergy to address local power outage concerns. Evergy made significant infrastructure improvements across Sugar Creek in 2026, with follow-up meetings scheduled to to discuss additional measures that might be needed.

Courtney Road Rebuilding (Sugar Creek): Secured a $700,000 state appropriation to design and rebuild Courtney Road, fixing a critical local transit route for residents and industrial access.

U.S. 24 Highway Modernization: Supported the nearly $30 million overhaul of U.S. 24 between Wilson Road and Route 291 - including street and traffic-signal improvements, resurfacing, stormwater upgrades, lighting, sidewalks, and ADA-accessible ramps.

Route 78 Sidewalk & Accessibility Upgrades: Backed nearly $3 million in sidewalk and pedestrian safety improvements along Route 78, expanding accessible walkways between Maywood Avenue and Lee’s Summit Road.

Route 291 Missouri River Bridge Project: Supported the nearly $92 million replacement of the northbound Route 291 bridge over the Missouri River and rehabilitation of the southbound bridge, maintaining a vital regional connector between Eastern Jackson and Clay counties.

Modernizing Port Authorities & Protecting Prevailing Wage Jobs: Sponsored House Bill 1346 which passed the Missouri House with strong bipartisan support from both Republicans and Democrats. This modernizes Missouri’s port-authority laws to help secure economic development investments and attract high-paying manufacturing and logistics jobs. Additional work helped to secure provisions supporting prevailing wage jobs and fair compensation for our skilled labor trades on PortKC projects. HB 1346 passed the Missouri House with strong bipartisan support from both Republicans and Democrats.

Building a stronger community isn't about political noise - it's about fixing our roads, keeping the power on, providing good paying jobs, and bringing our tax dollars back home to Eastern Jackson County.

YOU CAN’T CHANGE THE SCORE FROM THE BLEACHERS.

This week, two very different conversations left me thinking about the same thing.

At a Little League game, I watched a parent sit in the bleachers and yell about the outcome without being involved in the work that makes a team better.

Then, while knocking doors, I met people who told me they weren’t planning to participate in November’s election.

Different settings. Same question: If we want things to change, are we willing to be part of the process?

It’s easy to criticize a decision after it’s made. It’s harder to show up, get involved, ask questions, listen to people who disagree with us, and help find a better way forward.

That applies to a ballfield. It applies to our neighborhoods. And it applies to our county government.

You don’t have to agree with every decision. You don’t have to support every candidate. And you certainly shouldn’t stop asking tough questions of the people in charge.

But if we want better outcomes, we can’t leave all the work to someone else and expect things to improve on their own.

Jackson County belongs to all of us. Its future is a responsibility we all share.

Don’t just sit in the bleachers. Get in the game. Show up. Get involved. Make your voice heard.

Because the future of our community is too important to leave to someone else.
