Edward Cox, an early pioneer, came to the present-day Bristol area in 1773-1774, soon after Colonel Shelby established a trading post there. He settled north of Bluff City and joined the Revolutionary War efforts, rising to lieutenant. After the war Lieutenant Cox returned home, married Sallie Meredith, and began preaching from his home.
Eventually his popularity spread across “Old Holston Country.” During his long and busy lifetime Edward Cox was a Revolutionary War soldier, a family man, a farmer, a local businessman, a lay preacher, and a lifelong friend of Bishop Francis Asbury. Most notably, Edward Cox was the first Methodist preacher in Tennessee.
The Cox’s dogtrot style, log house stands as a reminder of 250 years of local history.
