Bluffton Township Fire District

Bluffton Township Fire District The Bluffton Township Fire District serves a 246 sq. www.blufftonfd.com

mile area of southern Beaufort County from Lemon Island (North) to Palmetto Bluff (South) and Jenkins Island (East) to New River (West) with 9 stations and 175 employees. The Bluffton Township Fire District (BTFD) was created by the Beaufort County Council in 1978 to provide fire and emergency services to all residents of the County south of the Broad River excluding the Town of Hilton Head Island

and Daufuskie Island. However, long before the Fire District was officially chartered several concerned and dedicated citizens living in the area had already been volunteering and providing the much-needed services that helped shape what is the current BTFD. The District practices the core values of respecting our community and its citizens and guests, providing for continuous improvement of ourselves and services, providing leadership toward a safer community, providing service to our customers, maintaining the trust of the community, and controlling costs for the taxpayers. Today the BTFD has evolved with the needs of the community in mind and is a professional and accredited fire and emergency services department. The District is actively involved in its community and is one of the top ten employers in the Bluffton area with 170 full-time employees providing service to the citizens around the clock. The District operates nine (9) fully staffed fire stations positioned strategically throughout its operational area to provide for more rapid response of emergency services should a citizen need assistance.

Today, we proudly recognize Battalion Chief Micheal “Todd” Harvey and celebrate more than 36 years of dedicated service to the fire service and the Bluffton community. (No, he isn't retiring just yet! 😄)

Chief Harvey began his fire service journey in 1989 as a volunteer and officially joined the Bluffton Township Fire District as a career firefighter in 1991. What started as volunteering quickly became a lifelong calling. Over the years, he has served in nearly every role in the organization, including Probationary Firefighter, Firefighter I–III, Senior Firefighter, Driver/Operator, Lieutenant, Captain, and now Battalion Chief, currently assigned to Station 35.

Throughout his career, Chief Harvey has earned numerous certifications and distinctions, including Paramedic, Nationally Accredited NAFI Arson and Vehicle Fire Investigator, Hazardous Materials Technician, and Rescue Technician. He has also been recognized as Volunteer Firefighter of the Year, Paid Firefighter of the Year, and Officer of the Year, honors that reflect both his technical skill and his leadership.

When asked what matters most after more than three decades in fire and EMS, Chief Harvey shared that while not every call is rewarding, his greatest hope is that he has made a positive difference in someone’s life. That perspective has guided his career and continues to inspire those who serve alongside him.

A lifelong Lowcountry native, Chief Harvey has witnessed firsthand the tremendous growth of the region and has remained motivated by his love for the job and, most importantly, the people he works with each shift. His advice to new members is simple but powerful: stay positive, never stop training, keep moving forward, and remember that even small acts of kindness can have a lasting impact. Above all, he reminds everyone to keep family and close friends at the center of life.

Outside the station, Chief Harvey enjoys hunting, fishing, scuba diving, and spending time with his family, including his wife Julie, son and daughter-in-law Matt and Cady, and grandson Owen.

Please take a moment to watch this video reel honoring Battalion Chief Harvey and join us in thanking him for 36+ years of service, leadership, and commitment to this community.

Thank you, Chief Harvey. Your legacy of service truly matters.

We are proud to support our neighbors and mutual aid partners at Jasper County Fire-Rescue during this weekend’s smoke alarm blitz. Working together on efforts like this helps ensure more homes are protected with early warning devices that can make a life-saving difference.

Smoke alarms remain one of the most effective tools for alerting residents to fire danger and improving safety throughout our communities!

Top Fire Code Violations We’re Seeing in January '26

Our Fire Marshal’s Office conducts annual commercial fire inspections to help keep employees, customers, and first responders safe. This video highlights the top fire code violations identified during recent inspections.

Most of these issues are preventable with routine maintenance and regular system checks. Addressing them early helps avoid violations and ensures critical life safety systems function properly when they are needed most.

If you are a business owner or property manager, now is a great time to review your systems and confirm everything is in compliance.

Questions about inspections or requirements? Our Fire Marshal’s Office is here to help.

January 2026 set a strong pace for the year ahead.

Bluffton Township Fire District firefighters responded to 939 calls for service in January, surpassing the call volume from the same month over the past three years. For comparison, January totals included 910 calls in 2025, 894 in 2024, and 830 in 2023. This steady increase reflects continued growth across our service area and an ongoing demand for emergency and non-emergency services.

Behind every number is a real call for help, from medical responses and fires to service calls and prevention related activity. Our firefighters remain ready around the clock, bringing professionalism and care to every response.

As our community continues to grow, so does our commitment to you. Thank you for the continued trust you place in your fire district.

Happy "Galentine’s" Day from Bluffton Township Fire District.

Today is about celebrating the people in our lives who bring support, care, and strength. The same is true for community safety. Our Community Risk Reduction Division is here so residents are equipped with knowledge and tools that protect the people they care about.

Over the past week we shared how CRR reduced risk at home and in neighborhoods in 2025. From CPR training and child safety seat installations to home safety visits and smoke alarm support, these efforts help keep our community safer every day.

Thank you to our CRR team, fire crews, partners, and residents who help make safety a community priority.

A Strong Foundation for What Comes Next

This graphic captures a snapshot of the work completed by Bluffton Township Fire District’s Community Risk Reduction Division in 2025. It reflects hundreds of in-person outreach efforts, thousands of safety conversations, and millions of opportunities to share life-saving information across our community.

As we look ahead, this work does not slow down. Community Risk Reduction continues to grow through expanded education, increased access to safety resources, and more opportunities to meet residents where they live, learn, and gather.

We are committed to building on this foundation in 2026 and beyond, reaching more residents, strengthening prevention at home, and reducing risk before emergencies occur.

Prevention, Education, and Access Every Day

Community safety does not happen on a schedule, and neither does risk reduction.

In 2025, the CRR Division supported:
▪ 109 in-person outreach events
▪ 30,000+ residents reached through education and outreach
▪ 5.0 million times safety messages were seen online
▪ 2.4 million unique individuals reached through digital platforms

By combining in-person education with consistent digital communication, safety messages are reinforced throughout the year, not just during emergencies or seasonal campaigns.
