In December 2024, Officer De La Torre and his family decided to begin a new adventure and answer a new calling with the California Highway Patrol.

After successfully completing the hiring process, Officer De La Torre entered the CHP Academy in November 2025, graduated in April 2026, and reported to the Blythe Area.

Now, after four months of Field Training, Officer De La Torre is officially on his own, serving and protecting the people of California.

The Blythe Area congratulates Officer De La Torre and wishes him a long, successful, and safe career. If you see him out and about, be sure to say hi!

As always, it is our pleasure to serve the people of California.

🌧️ EXTREME WEATHER HITS THE BLYTHE AREA 💨

On August 12 at approximately 5:50 p.m., the Blythe Area experienced an extreme weather event bringing high winds and heavy rain.

Although the storm lasted only about an hour, it caused significant damage throughout the area. Multiple traffic collisions were reported, including truck-tractor rollovers, and numerous power poles were knocked down, blocking traffic lanes and creating additional hazards.

We are currently in monsoon season, and sudden storms like this are to be expected this time of year. Weather conditions can change rapidly, bringing strong winds, heavy rain, blowing dust, and reduced visibility with little warning.

We ask motorists to remain alert to changing weather conditions. If you encounter hazardous weather, slow down, increase your following distance, and, when necessary, find a safe location away from the roadway to stop until conditions improve.

Your safety is our priority.

As always, it is our pleasure to serve the people of California.

August is Back to School Safety Month. As students head back to school, let's work together to keep every trip a safe one.

• Slow down in school zones and obey posted speed limits.
• Stop for school buses when required.
• Watch for children crossing streets.
• Put the phone away and stay focused behind the wheel.
• Give extra space to students walking or riding their bikes.

A few extra seconds of caution can make all the difference. Let's help every student arrive safely this school year. 🚌

☀️ Desert heat is no joke—especially at 110°F in the Blythe area. 🌵

Traveling through this region means long stretches of open desert with few services. In summer, temps can exceed 110°F, turning a simple breakdown into a serious situation fast.

Before you head out:
🚗 Fuel up before entering the desert
💧 Bring plenty of water for everyone
📱 Charge your phone and tell someone your plans
🔧 Make sure your vehicle is road-ready

A little preparation goes a long way. Don’t let a preventable issue turn into an emergency.

From all of us at the California Highway Patrol – Blythe Area: travel safely, plan ahead, and help keep everyone safe on California’s highways.

Tire Safety Week is a great reminder to check the only part of your vehicle that actually touches the road.

Before you head out:
✔️ Check your tire pressure
✔️ Inspect tread depth
✔️ Look for signs of wear or damage
✔️ Don't forget your spare

A few minutes of maintenance can help prevent blowouts, improve handling, and keep you and everyone else on the road safer.
