đź“… On This Day in History, June 10, 1942: The U.S. Army Air Forces opened an advanced pilot training school at the Blytheville Army Airfield.

What began as a World War II-era training base evolved into a Cold War stronghold. Eighty-three years later, we’re proud to carry forward that legacy of flight, progress and national service. From training fighter pilots to launching the future of Arkansas industry, this runway still means business.

🎖️ On display beginning Monday: the Medal of Honor awarded to 1st Lt. Edgar Harold Lloyd.

Lt. Lloyd grew up in Mississippi County, graduated from Blytheville High School and attended the University of Arkansas before being commissioned into the U.S. Army. Serving under Gen. George Patton’s Third Army, Lloyd led his platoon through intense enemy fire near Pompey, France, on Sept. 14, 1944, personally eliminating five machine-gun positions to protect his men. He was 22 years old.

Two months later, he was killed in action. Lloyd was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on April 7, 1945, for his extraordinary heroism and sacrifice.

The Medal of Honor display will be unveiled Monday, May 25, at the Mississippi County Courthouse in Blytheville immediately following the Mississippi County Memorial Day Event at 11 a.m.

Join us as we honor one of Mississippi County’s own.
