Sweden celebrates its National Day on 6 June.
Why 6 June?
The date honours two milestones in Swedish history:

It’s the date on which Gustav Vasa was elected king in 1523. Through his election, Sweden left the so-called Kalmar Union with Denmark and Norway, and once again became independent, which the country has been ever since.

In 1809, also on 6 June, Sweden adopted a new constitution. It clarified the roles of legislative, judicial and executive authority – across parliament, the courts and the king – while reducing the king’s power.

The Embassy of Sweden and Consulates organize voting in person at different voting locations throughout the U.S. You can also vote by postal mail.

Kick off the festivities with the traditional raising of the maypole at 3:00 PM! Bring fresh flowers to help decorate the pole and embrace the spirit of our Swedish tradition.
Pack your own picnic (or pre-order smörgåstårta) and enjoy a day filled with laughter, music and community. We'll have korv med bröd (hot dogs), soda and water available for purchase on site (one hot dog ticket is included for the little ones). Plus, enjoy a delightful fika with Swedish treats! There will also be dance around the maypole, crafts (pyssel), a quiz walk (tipsrunda), tug of war (dragkamp), and a fishing game (fiskdamm) — fun activities for all ages! Fiskdamm tickets will be available on site. Bring $$$ — cash and Zelle are the accepted methods of payment.

"Studenten" refers to the traditional Swedish high school (gymnasium) graduation, typically celebrated in late May or early June when around 100,000 students finish their 12 years of schooling. It is a massive, nationwide milestone marked by distinct cultural traditions, parties, and joyous celebrations.

The Cap (Studentmössa): Graduates wear a distinct white cap with a black or dark blue band, featuring their name and school.

The Outfits: Students traditionally wear white dresses, or suits with white shirts, often adorned with small charms or personalized sashes.

Champagne Breakfast: The day often kicks off early with a celebratory champagne (or sparkling cider) breakfast hosted by a student's family.

"Utspringet": The climax of the school day where students burst out of the school building running, screaming, and meeting their cheering families with flowers and handmade signs.

The Truck Ride (Studentflak): After leaving the school, graduates parade through town on large, decorated flatbed trucks, blasting loud music and celebrating.

Congratulations Felix Rosenqvist on winning the prestigious Indy500 yesterday. Felix is the third Swede to win. Marcus Ericsson won 2022 and Kenny Bräck 1999. 🇸🇪

The Meyer Shank Racing w/Curb Agajanian driver became the third Swede to win "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing," joining Kenny Brack (1999) and Marcus Ericsson (2022).
