"What's in that building?" Is a question we get sometimes when we are concluding our stamp mill tour.

The top floor has the remnants of an electrician's shop/storage shed. Dating to the k**b and tube wiring days -- there's an assortment of interesting spare parts and new old stock that never got used in the mill's days!

The lightning arresters are especially interesting, and you can imagine why they would need them in a big metal building on top of a mountain!

Baby animal season continues at Bodie!

If you are in the park later in the day you might get lucky enough to see the family of Long-Tailed Weasels that's currently hunting in the brush on the west end of town around the church and the DV Cain house.

These weasels are incredible hunters; they can take down prey bigger than then themselves. They are like pocket sized panthers!

The families stay together the first summer, before the young ones move on to start their own lives and families.

Even cooler? They turn white in the winter so they can operate in the snow! This is known as an ermine.

What are those cute little guys running around town this week?

Belding's Ground Squirrel pups leaving their nests to forage for the first time!

They come out of their nests for the first time when they are about a month old. At first, they stay close to home and safety, before starting to forage further from the burrow.

Female ground squirrels stay together in communities, but the baby males will eventually go off on their own.

California State Parks is honoring Memorial Day with free admission Monday for veterans, active duty, and reserve members.

Pictured is Bodie resident Les Bell who left Bodie to serve in the Navy in World War II.

World War II spelled the end for Bodie. Order L-208, issued in 1942, banned mining in Bodie until the order was lifted in 1945. Intended to a be a temporary measure to focus America's industrial efforts on the war, Bodie never recovered.

Bodie was already on the path to tourist attraction and ghost town before the war, with Ella Cain developing the Bodie museum in the early 1940s. Shutting down the mines for the war was the push that drove most remaining residents out for good.

20 years later, Bodie became a California State Park.
