I won’t be able to attend tonight’s City Council meeting in person, but I will be watching online and staying engaged as always.

First, I want to apologize to anyone who has reached out over the past several days and hasn’t heard back from me. I turned in my City iPad last week for our annual IT reset, which means I have not had access to my City email since Friday. I know some of you have been reaching out, especially about traffic, sidewalks, and other day-to-day concerns, and I appreciate that. I’ll be back up and running soon and will respond as quickly as I can.

Looking at tonight’s agenda, it’s a relatively straightforward meeting, but there are a few important items worth noting. We’ll be recognizing both our Electric and Gas Departments for outstanding safety performance, something that doesn’t always get headlines, but absolutely matters. These teams work behind the scenes every day to keep our community safe, and that deserves recognition.

There are also items related to infrastructure and long-term planning, including street reconstruction, drainage improvements, and continued investment in our reclaimed water system. These are the projects that are critical in keeping Boerne moving in the right direction.

Even when I can’t be in the room physically, I’m still working, still listening, and still focused on representing you well.

As always, thank you for your continued input, your questions, and your commitment to our community.

PS - Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve heard from many folks on traffic and rightfully so. It’s becoming a more frequent topic of conversation across our community. We have work to do, and I remain committed to practical, realistic solutions that improve flow and safety without overcomplicating the process. We recently rolled out our Comprehensive Safety Plan, and we are actively asking for your feedback. If you haven’t had a chance to review it yet, I encourage you to do so. Input from residents is critical to making sure we’re getting this right!

UPDATE: City offices will have a delayed opening on Tuesday, Jan. 27, with all City departments opening at 10 a.m.

ORIGINAL POST: Good morning from a very cold Boerne! Here is the latest information and impacts due to the icy weather we saw this weekend.

1️⃣ No trash/recycling on Monday, Jan. 26. All collection days are moved back by one day. That means that Monday residential customers will be serviced on Tuesday, Tuesday will be serviced Wednesday and so on throughout the week, with all residential services being scheduled to be fully completed by Saturday, January 31.

2️⃣ City offices will remained closed on Monday. Critical services will remain fully operational.

3️⃣ The warming center at the Patrick Heath Public Library will remain open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

4️⃣ If you are traveling today (especially this morning), please exercise extreme caution as many areas slick spots on our roads froze back over overnight.

Great update from our Utilities team!

Starting in January, trash and recycling will be collected on the same day each week instead of two separate days.

Fewer days with cans at the curb means cleaner streets, a more polished look for our neighborhoods, and one less thing for residents to keep track of. A small change that makes a big difference in keeping Boerne looking its best!

This week also marked the final session of the 9 week Boerne Citizens Fire Academy, and while I wasn’t able to attend the last class due to representing Boerne at the Annual Texas Municipal League Conference in Fort Worth, I didn’t want to let the moment pass without sharing a few reflections.

This program has been one of the most rewarding, hands-on experiences I’ve had as a council member and as a resident. Over the past two months, I’ve had the opportunity to learn directly from our firefighters…from hose operations and the “Smooth Bore vs. Fog Tip” debate, to rope rescue, swiftwater operations, and bleeding control training. Every session showed just how skilled, disciplined, and dedicated our crews are.

Their teamwork, professionalism, and sense of purpose are second to none. Whether it’s rescuing someone from a flooded creek, responding to a car accident, or managing complex structure fires, our firefighters train constantly to be ready for any scenario and it shows.

Boerne is incredibly fortunate to have a 100% committed, community-focused fire department. Their passion for service and constant pursuit of excellence make our city stronger and safer every day.

A big thank you to Lieutenant Toby Vicknair and the entire team at Boerne Fire Department for opening their doors and giving us this inside look at what it takes to keep our community safe. It’s an experience I’ll never forget.

Happy Friday morning. AND, Happy Halloween!

It’s been a GREAT week at the Texas Municipal League (TML) Conference in Fort Worth, an annual gathering of elected officials and municipal professionals from across the state. The conference featured experts covering a wide range of topics, from securing future water supplies and understanding the impact of legislative sessions, to community building, artificial intelligence, effective grant writing, and current issues such as land use and development laws.

More than 3,600 people attended this year’s event, including five representatives from Boerne. We connected with leaders from other communities to exchange ideas and learning what has worked well for them and what hasn’t. The exhibit hall alone hosted over 500 vendors showcasing everything a city might need to consider, from playground equipment and fleet vehicles to IT systems, HR tools, and public engagement technologies.

For me, this week was an eye opener. It reinforced that there are always new ways to improve how we operate to become more efficient, effective, and connected as a community. Just because something has been done a certain way for many years doesn’t mean it can’t be done better.

The best part? Every time I compared Boerne to other cities of similar size, I left the conversation feeling even more confident in the direction we’re heading. We are well ahead of the curve in many areas which is something every Boerne resident can take pride in.

While no community is perfect, Boerne continues to stand out as a model city. But even when you’re leading, you can’t stop improving….when you do, others will catch up. Let’s keep pushing forward, keep asking questions, and keep the lines of communication open as we continue to explore what’s possible for Boerne.

What a week in Boerne!

At Tuesday’s Council meeting most speakers shared concerns about the proposed Buc-ee’s, while one raised a concerns with odors near the wastewater facility. Though the comments leaned in one direction, I’m grateful that Boerne provides a forum where citizens can bring forward their concerns openly and respectfully. Our community may not always agree on outcomes, but we can be a community that handles tough issues with respect, grace, and integrity, and that’s something to value.

We also welcomed Councilman Kyle Mickelson, who took the oath of office to represent District 3. Congratulations, Kyle! And, a BIG congratulations to Larry Woods, recipient of the Marion Zurich Leadership Award, for his outstanding contributions to tourism and our local economy.

The Council approved updates to our financial policies, keeping Boerne fiscally strong and responsibly prepared for the future. Our City Manager also shared updates on key projects like the River Road Park improvements, our next fire station, and ongoing Dark Sky efforts, all great examples of how we’re investing in quality of life while preserving what makes Boerne special.

The rest of the week has been just as full:

On Wednesday, I attended the beam signing for St. Peter’s new Catholic school, a significant milestone for education in our community.

Yesterday, I joined the City of Boerne Employee Appreciation Lunch, where we celebrated MVPs across every department, from parks and rec to police, fire, library, and more. We also recognized staff with service anniversaries from 5 to 25 years; these are the people behind the scenes that make Boerne shine!

Yesterday evening was Week 4 of the Boerne Fire Department Citizens Academy, where we trained on personal protective equipment and SCBA gear. The versatility and dedication of our fire department is nothing short of incredible. Boerne is fortunate to have THIS team protecting us.

And now, it’s Friday. Game Day! I’m excited to cheer on the Greyhounds tonight and especially proud of our BHS Color Guard and Band. After tonight’s halftime show, they’ll be up at 3am to head to the Bands of America competition in San Marcos. Talk about commitment!

Weeks like this remind me why I’m so grateful to call Boerne home. We’re blessed with dedicated city staff, strong schools, talented students, engaged citizens, and a community that shows up for one another.

Happy Friday y'all. Have a great weekend!
