Units have stayed busy today! Crews have responded to multiple calls for service all over the area today. Calls have included a brush fire as well as responses to Southport and Bolivia. Currently, Engine 1 with crew is standing by at Supply Fire and providing coverage to the greater Supply area while crews from that area are assisting Tri Beach fire with a structure fire. Everyone stay safe today, and give our responders room to work if you seem them on a job.

If you don't have plans for dinner, we will also be out at spring lake park cooking up burgers and dogs while Boiling Spring Lakes Parks and Recreation hosts the first concert at the lake this evening!

Today, all of the men and women of Boiling Spring Lakes Fire Rescue would like to take a moment and honor those who gave all, for our country, their families and all of us who are still here today thanks to their sacrifices. So as we display the flag over Highway 87 to honor them, we also keep them in our thoughts and our hearts as we go about our day. Thank you just isn't enough. Still, we say thank you this memorial day. And remind everyone of the reason of this day. Y'all stay safe and enjoy the time with friends and loved ones.

Here are some action shots from our training burn yesterday. Some great training for the day. Some brand new folks got to experience real live fire conditions and what it can be like inside a burning structure for the first time. Everyone got some comraderie and team building, and our donation hosts were also even more gracious and provided food and snacks for everyone. All around, a solid day for training for everyone involved!

Attention BSL

Fire Rescue will be doing a training burn tomorrow, 5/16, in the 200 block of North Shore Dr. There will be smoke in the area, and a large fire department presence during the exercise. This training gives our newer personnel experience on real world exercises including fire ground operations and hands on use of the lines and equipment. These trainings provide invaluable skills for our personnel, both new and experienced, and allows us to move through many processes that we don't always get to do under normal training conditions.

Please also allow us room as there will be a large contingent of apparatus and personnel in the area and that section of N Shore Dr between Turner Rd and roughly 235 area of N Shore will be closed off. Thank you!

See smoke in the area?

No worries, Sunny Point and Orton are both performing prescribed burns today for forest management. Both agencies are monitoring their own activities and we have crews standing by as well for any potential escapees.

Prescribed burning helps maintain the health of the forest by clearing dense undergrowth and promotes healthy regeneration for the long leaf pines that inhabit the area. It also promotes regeneration of the unique plants of our area such as the Venus fly trap.

One year ago yesterday, May 2 2025, began a week of chaos, fear, and ultimately triumph here in BSL. Last year at around 10 am, is when the call came out that would ultimately be known as the Sunset Rd Fire. A year ago, our department was tested from the top down. Our community watched in wonder and horror as a beast of a fire reared up and began consuming undeveloped areas of the city of Boiling Spring Lakes.

Our personnel moved with commitment, purpose and dedication to shuffle apparatus, tools and equipment, and personnel all over the district- sometimes at their own peril. The area emergency services came together and from far and wide to help. For a week, around the clock, personnel fought, patrolled, dug in and held on!

In the end, nearly 1,400 acres would be burned. And aside from a couple small accessory type structures, no major damage was done to any home. No homes were lost, and there were only minor injuries to a couple firefighters working the lines. Today, the evidence of the path of the fire is still very visible. But the land is recovering as well. The ground growth is green. The trees still wear their scars, but are also recovering and growing. Most everyone has continued on with life. But we want to take a minute and acknowledge all of our people. Our entire roster was involved for most, if not all of the event. From handling things behind the scenes and coordinating donations as they flew in, to running rigs and digging lines while watching God's work steering the fire largely away from populated areas and allowing flare ups near houses to happen when the right personnel were in the right place with the right equipment at the right time!

Nearly every department in Brunswick county helped out at one point or another. Law enforcement and county and city leadership were in constant communication with the chief and command post, making sure we had everything we needed. The citizens brought food, water, and anything we could've thought of to offer support. Even if it was just kind words and a moment of support during a limited break. The support was beyond humbling. We came out the other side stronger, better and even more committed to providing the absolute best we can for our community. Thank you, all. For whatever it was you did or gave. Even if it was just prayer from another state, it worked and helped! And we appreciate it more than you'll ever know!

Take a minute (or 7ish) if you have it and watch the highlights from that time in the video. And please remember to burn responsibly.

Congratulations to now certified firefighter B. Faulk!

Firefighter Faulk completed an 8 month journey of nights and different weekends to complete the over 400 hours of the firefighter certification process. Combined hands on trainings and classroom instruction lead each person through the tedium of learning all the groundwork required to obtain a certification. All that hard work culminated tonight in a graduation ceremony at Southeastern Community College for the 2026 class. Now, she, and all her classmates, can go forth and get the real world experience to carry her through her career and beyond. Congratulations Firefighter Faulk! We're proud of you!

Continuing with the not just fires theme:

Tanker and crew responded to assist our Winnabow partners on Monday afternoon after a dump truck spilled a load of muddy clay dirt along a portion of highway 17. Our 3,000 gallon tanker responded to the scene to provide large water refill capabilities to keep the road clearing operations running steady.

A slight drip of rain did nothing to minimize the threat of wildfire. Please follow the bans.

The statewide burn ban remains in effect until further notice despite weekend rain in some areas. Persistent dry weather and increasing rainfall deficits from the last several months have left most of the state needing 10 inches of rain or more.

“While the rainfall we received over the weekend was a welcome sight, it offered little to no relief from widespread drought conditions while being nowhere near enough to reduce our wildfire risk,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Even the areas that received the heaviest amount of rain will quickly dry out from the sunshine and warmer temperatures. Until we get some additional rain and see more green-up in our forests, holding the burn ban in place statewide is the best option right now.”

While green-up and leaf-out are progressing at normal rate, low soil moisture, dry surface fuels and persistent low humidity are contributing to wildfire activity. For Western North Carolina, excessive forest fuels from Hurricane Helene are more available now than they were in 2025, low water levels in coastal areas have helped produce intense fire behavior where ground fire will likely be a long-term issue, and the Piedmont experienced 87 new wildfire starts over the weekend alone. Extended attack and mop-up efforts will be taxing and long-winded until drought conditions improve.

Crews respond overnight to a small woods fire threatening structures.

Units were dispatched around 10:30 last night to the report of a woods fire with structures threatened in the 200 block of Carolina Rd. Law enforcement arrived and advised active fire spreading quickly. When Engine 2 arrived, the crew immediately placed in service a 1³/⁴ " attack line and began knock down of the quick moving fire. Brush 1 and 2 were both assigned to the Charlestown Rd side to attack the head of the fire and create breaks to slow the spread while simultaneously protecting the structure there. The fire was brought under control within about 30 minutes, and crews remained on scene for another hour and a half performing mop up and overhaul. All units returned to service just before midnight. Investigation revealed the cause of the fire to be a small campfire that someone was having that spread to the nearby grass and brush.

This highlights the importance of the weather and drought conditions we are in. Folks, burn ban on any and all open burning means just that. It takes very little in this extremely dry and low humidity environment for a small campfire in the woods to become something way more, and it will happen fast! Weather remains very conducive to explosive fire growth and extreme behavior with chances for that fire to start spot fires well ahead and downwind from the current fire body. Please be smart and follow the bans! Help us stay at the station!
