Born in Brooklyn on November 30th, 1924, Shirley Chisholm was the oldest of four daughters. She would become only the second woman of color in the New York State Senate in 1964.

In 1968, she would go on to become the first African American woman to sit in the US Congress and in 1972, she became the first woman of color to run for president under the banner of one of the major parties.

She was a democrat through and through, and fought for the Equal Rights Amendment, opposed the Vietnam war, and supported anti-poverty legislation.

Her campaign slogan was “Unbought and Unbossed.” Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign logo made an homage to Representative Chisholm’s 1972 logo during her own bid in 2020.
