**BURN BAN LIFTED AT NOON APRIL 13, 2020**

Burn ban lifted for 32 Western North Carolina counties as conditions improve

Effective at noon Monday, April 13, the N.C. Forest Service has lifted a ban on all open burning for the following counties in western North Carolina: Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Cabarrus, Caldwell, Catawba, Cherokee, Clay, Cleveland, Gaston, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Iredell, Jackson, Lincoln, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mecklenburg, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain, Transylvania, Union, Watauga, Wilkes and Yancey. The burn ban went into effect April 3 due to hazardous forest fire conditions in the area.

While burn permits are now available in those counties, N.C. Forest Service officials continue to urge residents to reconsider burning yard debris through the end of May as careless debris burning is the leading cause of wildfires in North Carolina.

PSA: The Town and Gardner-Webb University have been in coordination, monitoring the COVID-19 situation, and we plan to reschedule the Webbstock event. Students will not be returning to campus until April 1 at the earliest. Our goal is to reschedule the event for the fall of this year. Final date and details are to be determined. While this is a very hard decision, we feel it is necessary to err on the side of caution, protect our citizenry and stand with the Nation in practicing common sense approaches to infection control.

We will continue to provide updates as they develop. The Town remains confident in its abilities to serve this Community and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this time.

I'm so thankful for the 2 young men who helped my daughter-in-law this morning while her husband is out of town. She said they were so nice and helpful and fixed her constantly beeping, loud detector and helped with several other areas of concern she didn't realize were problems. She couldn't say enough nice things about them. I was afraid she was going to break her neck trying to get to a detector in a vaulted ceiling or go crazy listening to the beeps. Thank you!
