May Training Recap: Preparing for Your Worst Day

May was an incredibly busy and productive month for the members of the North Spartanburg Fire District! Our crews logged serious hours honing their skills, mastering new equipment, and sharpening our response capabilities across multiple disciplines.

Here is a look back at what our members tackled this past month:

📐 Technical Rescue & Confined Space
We kicked off the month with hands-on training on our new Terradapter tripod, focusing on assembly and disassembly. Crews also reviewed our new Sked Unit before putting everything to the test in a full, realistic confined space scenario. To make things challenging, members had to think outside the box to locate unique, non-traditional anchors and successfully incorporated our rope winch into the operation.

🚛 Heavy Vehicle Extrication
Thanks to a sponsorship from the Gary Sinise Foundation, members attended a heavy vehicle extrication school. This gave our crews invaluable, hands-on experience learning how to stabilize, lift, and move large commercial rigs.

Did you know? NSFD covers 9 miles of Interstate 26, 7 miles of Interstate 85, and 5 miles of Business 85, along with several other major thoroughfares running through our district. Training for these low-frequency, high-risk incidents is vital to keeping our community safe.

🏠 Acquired Structure Drills
We wrapped up the month by taking advantage of an acquired structure to get "reps and sets" on foundational firefighting skills. Crews pushed hard through:
- Search and rescue operations
- Hose deployments & first-due drills
- RIT / Mayday scenarios
- Window-to-door conversions
- Vertical roof ventilation
- Legacy residential building construction review and more!

At NSFD, we strive to provide the highest level of training to our members so that we can respond at the highest level on your worst day. A special thank you to our training division for making all this come to life, our members for putting in the hard work and sweat and to anyone else who assisted and/or participated in the drills this month.

LITHIUM ION BATTERY FIRE

Today at around 1250, Wingo Park was alerted to a trash fire at 2550 New Cut Circle. With comments from Dispatch about Lithium Ion Batteries being on fire, Wingo Park Truck 3 requested Shady Grove and North Spartanburg. Engine 20, Engine 22, and Truck 3 arrived on scene to find multiple large pallets of Lithoum Ion Batteries on fire and in thermal runaway. Battalion 20 held the "New Cut Circle" Command, upgraded this incident to a hazmat incident and requested 3 additional engine companies, Hazmat 1 and Hazmat Chief 94, Chief 194, Rehab 94, and SEMS Medic 8. Crews secured a positive water source and set up 2 ground monitors for fire protection/exposure control against the other pallets of Batteries not on fire and nearby tractor trailers. Decon and air monitoring was then set up along with EMS checks and rehab. Units remained on scene for 3+ hours until the Batteries burned themselves out.

Our truck committee is currently out in Ocala, Florida at the E-ONE Fire Trucks (Official Site) plant conducting the final on our new ladder truck. We are ready to receive her and see her on the streets of the district.

Some key features on this build include:
- True truck concept (no water pump or water tank). This apparatus will have CAFS (Compressed Air and Foam System) capabilities for those dumpster, vehicle fire or if the ladder company was to arrive on scene to a structure fire first due. This allows for more storage/compartment space to carry additional rescue equipment. Truck 3 is a rescue/ladder and carries a variety of rescue equipment for all disciplines of technical rescue. Truck 3 has also been identified and operates as a ladder company meaning their priorities are searching for victims and making the structure safer for other companies operating inside the structure. Truck 3 is currently staffed with 4 personnel at all times.

- Slam doors woth removable hinges to allow maximum compartment space

- No permanent waterway on the aerial to allow for a slimmer/tighter aerial piece to get into tight areas for rescues. The apparatus will still carry a 120 foot section of 3 inch and a removable master stream for those defensive fires but again, the priority of this apparatus is life safety.

- Shortest outrigger span. If you can open the doors, the truck will be able to set up.

- Blacked out package

- Very healthy compliment of ground ladders

- Firetech scene lighting and more

COMMERCIAL STRUCTURE FIRE

On Sunday, May 31st, at approximately 0920 NSFD units were alerted to a business fire at 2550 New Cut Circle. Shady Grove Engine 22 arrived on scene as the first due engine and called a working fire from a 1-story warehouse. Engine 22 members stretched a 1 3/4 handline and began fire attack. Engine 20 arrived on scene as the second due engine and reverse laid out to the hydrant and FDC, that was over 1000 feet away. Engine 20 Driver pumped the FDC as well as pumped our Oasis valve to boost pressure up to Engine 22. Wingo Park Truck 3 arrived on scene as the first due special and conducted primary searches. North Spartanburg Battalion 20 arrived on scene as the first due chief and held the "New Cut Circle" Command. Due to comments of Lithium Ion Batteries and other hazardous material possibly being involved, the County Hazmat Team was requested. Units remained on scene for several hours until the fire was extinguished and all Hazmat procedures were finalized. We want to thank all of our members who came back and assisted, our auto aid partners, County Hazmat Team, County Emergency Managments and the other departments who back filled stations while we operated on this incident.

🚨 Acquired Structures Wanted🚨

Do you own a house or building that is scheduled for demolition? Before it comes down, consider allowing our department the opportunity to use it for valuable hands-on training.

While we are not able to burn the structure down, we would greatly appreciate the chance to train inside the home or building prior to demolition. There is no better way to prepare firefighters and rescuers than by training in real-world environments on actual structures.

Training evolutions may include:

• Forcible entry
• Hose line deployment and water flow operations
• Firefighter rescue scenarios
• Vertical ventilation (cutting roof openings to release superheated smoke and gases)
• Technical rescue training
• Vehicle-into-structure stabilization and shoring
• Tree-into-structure stabilization scenarios
• Search and rescue operations
• Ladder operations and other realistic emergency response training

These training opportunities help our personnel build and maintain the skills needed to safely protect our community when real emergencies happen.

If you own a property with a home, commercial building, or other structure that you plan to demolish, we would love to speak with you about potential training use before demolition begins.

📞 Please contact us for more information or to discuss a possible training opportunity.

Attached are pictures of a recent acquired structure that the property owner allowed the fire department to come in and train. More training pictures will be posted once all training is completed.

NREMT CERTIFIED: Huge congratulations to Firefighter Hunter Wylie!

Congratulations to Firefighter Hunter Wylie on officially earning his National Registry EMT (NREMT) certification. EMS is a critical part of what we do and is usually what makes up about 80% or more of the call volume in the fire service across the US.

Earning those NREMT patches is no easy task. FF Wylie had to endure over 150+ hours of classroom and hands on training. Months spent learning medical terminology, patient assessments, pharmacology, trauma care and lifesaving skills. FF Wylie also had to conduct "Ride Alongs" where he had to ride with an EMS provider to acquire a certain number of patient care reports (PCRs). On top of it all, he had to pass the NREMT Cognitive Exam. This is a computer test that changes its difficulty based on the answers chosen to the previous question. With a passing rate of anywhere from 65-72%, FF Wylie showed proficiency and passed.

FF Wylie, we are proud of your hard work and dedication. Your commitment to sharpening your skills makes our crews stronger and keeps our citizens safer. All NSFD apparatus always have a minimum of a NREMT and operate as a minimum of a BLS (Basic Life Support) unit. We do have some Paramedics and have ASL(Advanced Life Support) capabilities.

Join us in congratulating FF Hunter Wylie!!

PROBATION COMPLETED: Congratulations Firefighter Massey!

Join us in giving a massive round of applause to Firefighter Alexander Massey!
Firefighter Massey recently wrapped up his probationary period, putting his hard work, dedication, and training to the test at our training facility. From mastering ladder throws to proving his tactical skills under pressure, he has shown exactly what it takes to protect and serve our community.

Completing probation is no small feat. It requires grit, endless hours of drilling, and a true commitment to the craft. We are incredibly proud of his growth and thrilled to officially welcome him as a fully fledged member of the team.

Thank you for your hard work, FF Massey. Keep up the great work, stay safe out there, and welcome to the family!

🇺🇸 Memorial Day: Remember and Honor 🇺🇸

As we head into this year's Memorial Day, let us look beyond the parades, backyard barbecues, and pools to truly remember the deep purpose of this holiday.

What is Memorial Day?
Unlike Veterans Day (which honors all who served) or Armed Forces Day (which honors those currently in uniform), Memorial Day is dedicated exclusively to a solemn purpose: paying our deepest respect and gratitude to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in our United States Armed Forces.

They are the heroes who answered the call, put on the uniform, and never made it back home to their families. We pause today to ensure that their courage, their lives, and their legacies are never forgotten.

How we can honor them today:
Pause at 3:00 PM: Join Americans nationwide for the National Moment of Remembrance - a single minute of silent reflection.

Share a Legacy: Learn the name of a fallen service member. Tell their story.

Live Gratefully: Their sacrifice is the price of our liberty. Let us live our lives in a way that is worthy of their incredible service.

To all the Gold Star families who carry the heavy weight of a missing piece at their tables today, our hearts are with you. We promise to always remember.
We shall not forget. 🇺🇸🚒

As the weather warms up, we know many of our neighbors are headed to the pool. At North Spartanburg Fire & Emergency Services, we want to ensure everyone stays "water smart" this season. Whether you are at a community pool or in your own backyard, remember these four life-saving tips:

Designate a Water Watcher: Always assign a responsible, sober adult to keep their eyes on the water at all times without distractions.

Secure the Area: Ensure pools are surrounded by a four-sided isolation fence with self-closing and self-latching gates to prevent unsupervised access.

Learn Life-Saving Skills: Make sure everyone in the family knows how to swim, and that adults are trained in CPR.

Enforce Pool Rules: Consistency is key—remind everyone of the "No Running," "No Diving," and "Swim with a Buddy" rules every time they get in.

Let’s work together to make this a safe and fun summer for our entire community!
