Drizzle's Stormwater Series: Week 3: Test Before You Dig!

Before planting a rain garden, it's important to make sure your yard is a good fit.

Test Drainage (Percolation Test)
Dig a few holes about 1 foot deep and fill them with water. If the water takes longer than 24 hours to drain, you may need to choose a different location for your rain garden.

Know Your Soil
Different soil types absorb water at different rates. Sandy and silty soils are typically good choices for rain gardens, while soils with a high clay content may not drain well enough.

Taking a little time to test your site now can help ensure your rain garden is successful for years to come!

Drizzle's Stormwater Corner--Week 2: Planning Your Rain Garden

Thinking about adding a rain garden to your yard? The first step is choosing the right location!

Start by taking a walk around your property during or after a rainstorm. Watch where water naturally flows and collects. Once you've identified a potential location, make sure it is at least 10 feet away from your home's foundation.

Before you start digging, it's important to make sure your soil drains well. A simple soil and infiltration test can help determine if your yard is a good fit for a rain garden. These tests can be done yourself or with the help of a landscaping professional.

Next, you'll need to determine the size of your rain garden based on the amount of runoff it will collect. Factors such as roof size, drainage area, and available space all play a role in designing a garden that works effectively.

After installation, pay attention to how water moves through the garden after a rainfall. Areas that stay wet longer are perfect spots for moisture-loving plants!

The annual Foundry Day Arts & Crafts Festival returns to Boiling Springs on 𝐒𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟔, 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟗:𝟎𝟎 𝐀𝐌 𝐭𝐨 𝟒:𝟎𝟎 𝐏𝐌. Visitors can enjoy more than 100 juried artists and craftsmen, delicious food vendors, live entertainment, and a beautiful day around Children's Lake. Admission is free!

Signs are posted to indicate which side of the street will be swept on each day.

This month, we're kicking off a new educational series on our Township page focused on MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems) topics that help protect our local waterways and community.

For June, we'll be exploring Home Rain Gardens. Each week we’ll explore what they are, how they work, and the many benefits they provide. Rain gardens help capture Stormwater runoff, reduce pollution, improve water quality, and create habitat for birds, butterflies, and other wildlife.

You'll also meet our MS4 mascot, Drizzle the Duck, who will be helping explain these topics in a fun and easy-to-understand way throughout the month!

Be sure to check back each week for new information, tips, and ideas you can use at home to help manage Stormwater and protect our local environment.

In observance of Memorial Day, South Middleton Township offices will be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026.

Waste Management will also be observing the holiday. There will be NO trash collection on Monday, May 25, and all services will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week.

The Compost Site will be open regular Saturday hours.

As we enjoy the holiday weekend, we remember and honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

Petersburg Road will be closed 24 hours a day from Wednesday, May 20 through Friday, May 22, 2026 for sewer line repairs.

The closure will be between Fairview Street and Westminster Drive, as shown on the attached map. Please plan ahead and use alternate routes during this time.
