SLOW DOWN. SAVE LIVES.

Drivers traveling through Boiling Springs will notice an important change along NC 150/Main Street. The North Carolina Department of Transportation has reduced the posted speed limit from 35 MPH to 25 MPH between Ingles and Ramsgate Drive.

A 10 MPH difference may not sound like much, but when it comes to traffic safety, every MPH matters.

Research from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows just how dramatically the risk of serious injury to a pedestrian increases with vehicle speed. At an impact speed of 25 MPH, the average risk of serious injury or worse is approximately 32%. At 35 MPH, that risk increases to approximately 67%, which is more than double.

Speed also affects a driver's ability to react. The faster a vehicle is traveling, the farther it travels before the driver can respond to a pedestrian, another vehicle pulling into the roadway, a bicyclist, or an unexpected hazard. Higher speeds also require more distance to stop. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety notes that higher speeds make crashes more likely because drivers have less time to react and need more distance to slow or stop.

That is especially important along a busy section of roadway where vehicles may be turning into businesses and neighborhoods, entering or exiting driveways, and interacting with pedestrians and bicyclists.

The goal isn't simply to make you drive slower. The goal is to make our community safer.

Please pay attention to the newly posted speed limit and begin reducing your speed as you travel through this area. Our officers will be working to educate motorists about the change and encourage compliance.

The Town will be conducting smoke testing of its sanitary sewer system Tuesday, August 17th, beginning at 9:30 a.m.. These tests will assist in locating breaks and defects in the sewer system.

Testing will take place on Lyman Street and East College Avenue.

During the test, you may see smoke coming from vent stacks on buildings or from holes in the ground. Don't be alarmed. The smoke has no odor, is non-toxic, non-staining, does not create a fire hazard and will dissipate in a few minutes.

Before the testing, please pour water into your basement floor drains and into any unused sinks. This will seal the drain traps so that smoke will not enter your home or building through the drain.

If you have any questions, call Town Hall at 704-434-2357.

Milling work will begin on Monday, August 17th on WALL AVENUE.

Thursday garbage collection will take place as normal, albeit earlier in the day. Please place your garbage out Wednesday evening to ensure no missed garbage collection.

Be alert when driving in the area as there will be both crews and equipment in the roadway. When possible, use an alternate route.

Thank you.
