🌬 Winds continue to increase as light showers move south to north. Gusts are generally 35 to 45 mph still, with some isolated cases of 50 mph. The broad shield of light rain is enough to keep the gusts strong, but on the right side of the picture, a microburst is showing off why that 60 mph wind gust warning is still being messaged.

The picture shows current radar below current wind gust observations.

🌬️ Gusts 40-50 mph are being observed along the line of showers moving south to north, with a few isolated cases of winds greater than 50 mph. This roughly reflects the winds that will move through the region later, with gusts greater than 60 mph still possible.

We will continue to update y'all with the latest observations/forecast.

8/21/2026: We are tracking the potential for a strong wind storm this evening to move through S-Central Idaho and the Snake Plain. There is considerable disagreement amongst high-resolution models as to the strength and structure of the winds, but our strongest model (shown below) carries 45 to 60 mph wind gusts through the region around 6 to 10 PM tonight. Winds this strong would have no problem kicking up dust and carrying it long distances.

One advantage we will have in tracking the gust strength is how it develops to the south in northern Nevada and the highlands along the border. We should see wind gusts observations from automated weather stations telling us what the true strength of the winds will be before they move into the Snake Plain.
