Hug it, litigate it, and watch it burn. Sixteen days before the Grasshopper Fire started, Oregon Wild served notice to sue over four more Mt. Hood projects.

The fire has now burned more than 77,000 acres at 20 percent containment and it’s continuing to grow. Suppression has cost $33.1 million. Highway 35 is closed, the Mt. Hood loop is cut, and Mt. Hood Meadows was evacuated. It took the first ground deployment in Oregon Air National Guard history, 44 personnel, to help fight it.

The Forest Service had a plan for this ground. Its own analysis said the treatment would reduce the extent and severity of wildland fire and create safe places for suppression crews to work. Oregon Wild sued in 2023. The settlement narrowed the scope and cut treatment intensity, and taxpayers covered $55,000 in their own attorney fees. Eighteen months later the agency had not implemented the focal point of the project. Then lightning struck. Crews are now cutting line by hand in beetle-killed timber on slopes too steep for equipment, and containment has gone backwards.

This is not a one-off. It’s a pattern. BRC's NEPA Jail tracker holds 279 of them across 5.3 million acres. Link in bio for the full details on the Grasshopper Fire & to browse the NEPA Jail Tracker.

We're calling on Oregon Wild to hand the $55,000 taxpayers covered for their attorney fees to the crews fighting the Grasshopper Fire, and to withdraw their notice of intent to sue over four more Mt. Hood projects.

For decades, millions of acres across the West – including many in New Mexico – have been stuck in Wilderness Study Area (WSA) status. These areas restrict OHV access, hinder maintenance, and prevent multi-use recreation. NMOHVA and the BlueRibbon Coalition are working together to address this. Join the fight and help us secure public access for all!

When we saw there was a court date coming up in Center for Biological Diversity’s lawsuit to shut down the Oregon Dunes we reached out to Save the Riders Dunes to see if they need anything. Legal costs always climb at this point in a legal fight, and we agreed to help them fundraise. This morning we got a call from Friends of Oceano Dunes saying they are ready to match $5,000 to send to Oregon. We’re about $1,000 short of being able to match that.

But we think we can do better if everyone who is sick of Center for Biological Diversity steps up and pitches in. It’s their lawsuit that closed the Mojave desert. They’re the ones fighting close Oceano Dunes. They’re the ones fighting to close Oregon Dunes. Check out our NEPA Jail Litigation Tracker to see all the suits they’ve filed to prevent the management of our forests that are all burning up right now.

When our friends in Oregon show up in court on Monday, let’s make sure they know they’ve got an army of support behind them and an overflowing war chest, so they can negotiate from a position of strength. Even if you can’t donate, make sure your friends and groups see this. If your club or organization wants to add to the matching funding pool reach out to us before we send our weekly newsletter out tomorrow (Saturday).

All donations made through the link below will enter you to win a custom Polaris RZR and every dollar will be tracked and sent to Save the Riders Dunes to support their legal fight.

Lake Powell stays! Reclamation's Final EIS is out, and draining Powell never made the analysis. Reclamation also built that alternative on the same architecture we argued for: protective floors on the reservoirs, paired with cuts that scale to how much water the system actually has.

That is your work. Reclamation logged more than 18,000 comments on the draft, and going back to 2022, nearly 2,000 of you submitted our Fill Lake Powell, Path to 3588 letter— which Reclamation acknowledged on the record directly. Recreation stayed on the table because people refused to let it be treated as an afterthought.

It does not fill the lakes. The plan manages scarcity. No set of operating rules puts water back in the river. We wrote out where it falls short, what that means for the water you ride, and the one plan on the table built to add water instead of divide it.
