Today marks the 212th anniversary of the destruction of the first White House, US Capitol, and other federal buildings by British Forces during the War of 1812. The White House’s foundation survived the fire and James Hoban, the building’s first architect, returned to rebuild what was then referred to as the “Executive Mansion.” During the 1950s building renovations, President Harry S. Truman authorized the extraction of stones from the White House’s foundation that featured markings made by the building’s first workmen, some of whom were also Freemasons.

These stones were subsequently distributed to different American grand lodges and other national bodies as a public reminder of the building’s history.

In April 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt became the first honorary Grand Master of the DeMolay International, a Masonic-affiliated youth organization. Frank S. Land, the organization’s founder, along with several other executive officers visited the White House to present the special collar to the President.
