📢 Bolingbrook Residents: New Illinois E‑Bike Law Starts January 1, 2027

Hey ! If you or your family use electric bikes around town, here’s a quick heads‑up about Illinois’ updated e‑bike rules taking effect January 1, 2027.

E‑Bike Classes
• Class 1: Pedal-assist only, up to 20 mph
• Class 2: Throttle & Pedal-assist, up to 20 mph
• Class 3: Pedal-assist only, up to 28 mph
• E-bikes that travel faster than 28 mph must be titled, registered, insured, and riders must have a valid driver's license.

Age Requirements
• Riders must be 16 or older to use a Class 3 e‑bike
• Riders must be 15 or older to use Class 1 or Class 2 e‑bikes

Helmet Rules
• Helmets are required for all Class 3 riders and passengers
• Recommended for everyone, no matter which class you ride

Where You Can Ride
• Class 1 & 2 e‑bikes can be used anywhere regular bicycles are allowed
• Class 3 access may vary based on local paths and trail rules

As electric bicycles and scooters continue to grow in popularity throughout Bolingbrook, we want to remind residents of the Village’s ordinance regarding their safe and responsible use.

To help keep our roadways, sidewalks, and trails safe for everyone, please remember:

• E‑bikes must have pedals, be under 750w, display class/battery info, and follow the Bicycle Rules of the Road.
• Riders must be at least 13 years old.
• Class 1 and 2 motors stop assisting at 20mph; Class 3 requires a speedometer and stops at 28mph.
• Electric scooters must be under 750w and are only allowed on sidewalks.
• Any device 750w or above is prohibited.

Just before 11:00 a.m. today, the Bolingbrook Fire Department responded to reports of multiple overturned kayaks on the DuPage River, with at least one person reported to be in the water.

Upon arrival, firefighters initiated search and rescue operations for multiple distressed kayakers. The Bolingbrook Fire Department was assisted by the Naperville Fire Department and the Plainfield Fire Protection District, whose personnel responded to support the coordinated search and rescue effort.

Five kayakers in distress were safely removed from the river. During the incident, crews worked to account for all individuals who were part of the kayaking group. A total of 22 kayakers were safely located and accounted for.

No injuries were reported among the kayakers or responding emergency personnel.
The Bolingbrook Fire Department reminds everyone that rivers can be deceptively dangerous. Even experienced paddlers can encounter swift currents, submerged hazards, changing water conditions, and strainers that can quickly create life-threatening situations.
Anyone participating in recreational activities on moving water should:
• Always wear a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device (PFD).
• Check river and weather conditions before launching.
• Paddle with others and communicate your planned route.
• Avoid waterways when water levels or current are elevated.
• Carry appropriate safety equipment, including a whistle and a means of communication in a waterproof container.

The successful outcome of today's incident highlights the importance of wearing a PFD and being prepared before entering moving water. The Bolingbrook Fire Department encourages everyone to make water safety a priority whenever enjoying local rivers and waterways.

SCAM ALERT: Door-to-Door Distraction Theft Crews Targeting Residents

The Will County Sheriff's Office is warning residents—especially our senior citizens—to be on alert for individuals operating door-to-door scams throughout the area.

These organized theft crews often pose as landscapers, tree trimmers, driveway sealers, roofers, or home repair contractors. Their goal is to gain your trust and, in many cases, gain access to your property or home.

A common tactic involves one person engaging the homeowner in conversation outside or inside the residence while an accomplice quietly enters through another door to steal cash, jewelry, medications, or other valuables.

🔒Help protect yourself and your loved ones:

✅ If you did **not** request a service, **do not open the door.**

✅ Never allow strangers into your home unless you have scheduled the work and verified who they are.

✅ Be cautious of anyone offering "today only" deals or claiming they noticed a problem with your roof, driveway, trees, or foundation.

✅ Keep all doors locked—even when you're home.

✅ If someone is working outside your home, remain aware of your surroundings and make sure all other entrances are secure.

✅ Ask for identification and a business card. Legitimate contractors expect questions.

✅ Never feel pressured to make an immediate decision or payment.

✅ If something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts and end the conversation.

**Please check in with your elderly family members, friends, and neighbors and share this info, it could help prevent them from becoming a victim.**

It is with sadness that the Will County Emergency Management Agency acknowledges the passing of Arthur "Art" Vidmar (N9AOP).

Art dedicated many years of service to Will County Emergency Management, contributing his time, knowledge, and skills in support of emergency communications, severe weather operations, disaster response, and volunteer training. Throughout his years with the agency, he helped mentor volunteers, supported countless emergency incidents and community events, and played an important role in the development of our communications capabilities.

Art's commitment to public service extended beyond our agency through his involvement in amateur radio and Skywarn. In recognition of his many years of volunteer service, he received the Illinois Governor's Volunteer Service Award in 2022.

We extend our sincere condolences to Art's family, friends, and all who had the opportunity to know and serve alongside him. We are grateful for the many positive contributions he made to our community over the years, and his legacy of service will be remembered.

Rest in peace, Art. Thank you for the years you dedicated to helping make Will County a safer place.
