Missouri, we need to talk about measles.
Weāve been healthy long enough to forget how devastating this disease really is, but measles hasnāt forgotten us.
Measles is more than "just a rash." It also isn't a simple childhood illness. Measles can cause pneumonia, brain swelling, hospitalization and even death.
Missouriās vaccination rate is too low to protect our kids. Weāre below the 95% needed for herd immunity, which means outbreaks can spread fast in our communities. One measles case can infect 9 out of 10 unvaccinated people, and the virus can hang in the air for up to two hours after someone coughs or sneezes.
Two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine give 97% lifetime protection. Outbreaks are actively happening across the country. If you are not already protected, it's not too late to vaccinate!
We can stop measles. We can protect our kids and our communities.
But we have to act now.
