As summer winds down, it’s time to close the Butterfly Garden. The monarchs are beginning their incredible journey south to Mexico, traveling thousands of miles to their winter home. We will wish them safe travels as we tag and release any that emerge this week and look forward to welcoming a new generation back next year!

Butterfly Garden Spotlight: Monarch Chrysalis

After weeks of munching on milkweed and growing bigger with each stage, our monarch caterpillars have found spots to hang and begin their transformation.

For the next 7–10 days, the monarchs will develop inside its bright green chrysalis. Soon, a brand-new monarch emerges, ready to spread its wings!

These monarchs will then be tagged and released to begin their migration to Mexico.

Our Butterfly Garden is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8:30am until 3:30pm through the end of August. Numbers of butterflies is currently dependent on the Monarchs emerging. Entry is included with paid Day Use.

Butterfly Garden Butterfly Spotlight: Common Buckeye

With its bold "eye spots" and quick, darting flight, the Common Buckeye is one of the easiest butterflies to recognize! Buckeye butterflies have six colorful eye spots on their wings that help startle predators and draw attention away from their body.

These butterflies are fast fliers and often perch on bare ground or low vegetation before quickly taking off to chase rivals or search for flowers. Unlike many butterflies, Buckeyes can't survive New York winters. They migrate north each spring and head south again in the fall to warmer climates.

Our Butterfly Garden is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8:30am until 3:30pm through the end of August. Numbers of butterflies and species present will vary daily. Entry is included with paid Day Use.
