To the Bolton Community:
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our Chief of Police, Luke Hamburger, who died unexpectedly on Sunday, October 5.
For the past two decades, Chief Hamburger served our community with dedication, professionalism, and integrity. As a leader, he combined warmth with strength, and his commitment to community policing and public safety made our town a better place. He was a lovely person whose presence brought out the best in those around him. His loss will be felt deeply by all who knew him, and his imprint on our town will remain for years to come.
Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and colleagues in the Police Department during this incredibly difficult time. We ask that the community join us in keeping them in their thoughts.
We will share information about services and ways to honor Chief Hamburger's memory as details become available.

This evening at 5:30pm a fire alarm was received from 600 Main Street, Bolton Country Manor. Bolton Fire Department was dispatched by Nashoba Valley Regional Dispatch for the activated smoke detector. During the dispatch a 911 call was received reporting smoke coming from the mechanical room by a resident. Responding fire crews requested the working fire assignment with the report of smoke in the building. Mutual-aid was requested from Berlin, Boxborough, Clinton, Harvard, Lancaster,Sterling and Stow Fire Departments, Boylston and Devens Fire Departments covered Bolton Fire Station.
The fire was extinguished by Bolton and mutual aid companies by 6:00pm. The building was metered and found to have high levels of carbon monoxide. Covering fire crews and Bolton Police Department assisted with the residents while at the Bolton Public Safety building. The incident was brought under control by 6:30pm a representative from MEMA was requested to the scene to assist if an overnight shelter was needed. A special thanks to Nashoba School District Superintendent Kirk Downing and staff for assisting in getting a school prepared if overnight sheltering was needed.
The initial cause of the fire was a malfunction of the heating system and the fire was contained to the central heating system. Property management working with the Bolton Fire Department contacted their repair company to respond to the incident. The technician was able to make the repairs and restore the heating system. All residents were notified they could return to their apartments. Some residents were transported back to Bolton Country Manor by bus or by personally owned vehicles. Chief Legendre regrets to inform everyone of the passing of Deputy Chief Jack Holbrook Retired. Deputy Holbrook served the Town of Bolton from 1964-2016 an impressive 52 years. Retirement from the department did not slow Deputy Holbrook down as he continued to be involved with the department with projects such as fire ponds, pump training and keeping an experienced eye on everyone, including the Chief for a total of 60 years. Jack was our department historian and always passing along facts about Bolton Fire Department and Bolton as a community. A fact that Jack passed along to me; Bolton Fire responded to the City of Boston during the Coconut Grove fire of 1942. Bolton fire had one of the earliest fire trucks with an on board generator and lighting system. Rest easy Deputy we will take it from here, you will be missed.

As cooler temperatures, higher relative humidity, and precipitation move across Massachusetts, the extreme risk of outdoor fire spreading and growing quickly has declined significantly. Cooking and warming fires are permitted in Bolton. Please have your fire in a contained area, such as an outdoor fireplace, and have a way to extinguish the fire handy. Lifting of the ban does not include the burning of brush at this time and we will continue to monitor conditions as the Open Burning season approaches. The Open Burning season starts January 15 and runs through May 1, 2025. A permit is required and will be available online on or around January 1, 2025
