📢 Outdoor Warning Siren Test – Polk County Emergency Management will test the outdoor warning sirens on Saturday, September 5 at 12:00 p.m. If you hear the sirens at that time, it is only a test.

Outdoor warning sirens are designed to alert people who are outside that dangerous weather or another emergency may be approaching. When you hear a siren, it means it is time to go indoors and seek more information right away.

🚨 Sirens may be activated for:
• Tornado warnings
• Severe thunderstorms with destructive winds
• Other urgent hazards that require people outdoors to take shelter

⚠️ Important reminder: Outdoor warning sirens are not meant to be heard indoors and should not be your only way to receive weather alerts. Always have multiple ways to receive warnings, including weather radios, phone alerts, and local media.

🌧️ Catch the Rain, Reduce the Runoff

Rain barrels are a simple way to help manage stormwater right in your own yard. Connected to a downspout, a rain barrel captures rainwater that would otherwise run across your property and into the storm sewer.

A typical rain barrel can capture 50–60 gallons of water, giving you the opportunity to reuse that water for gardens, plants and lawns while helping reduce stormwater runoff.

Small steps at home can make a difference for our local waterways. 💧

Now that school is back in session, make sure you know what the signs mean and stay alert near school zones:

🚸 Pedestrian crossing signs mean watch for people crossing and be prepared to stop. When activated properly, flashing lights will alert drivers that someone is entering the crosswalk. As a driver, you must be prepared for pedestrian traffic at all times.
🏫 School zone signs remind you to slow down and be extra cautious. The school zone for the Garfield Campus starts just North of 10th St. SE and stops at 1st St. NW. The school zone for the Jr High/High School Campus starts just North of 6th St. NE and stops just south of 16th St. NE/NE 86th St. (gravel road). Adhere to the 25 mph speed limit when the lights are flashing.
🛑 Temporary stop signs are used near schools to help manage traffic and keep students safe. When the signs are visible, please come to a complete stop for students, families walking their kids to school, crossing guards and buses.

Slow down, follow the signs, and help make every trip to and from school safer.
