Rechargeable batteries are found in cell phones, laptops and all other electronic devices that can be plugged into a power source and be charged. These batteries can be made of many different materials that are potentially hazardous to human health and the environment. The good thing, they are easy to identify because they should be clearly marked as rechargeable. THEY SHOULD NEVER BE THROWN IN THE TRASH.

Proper battery disposal is critical for keeping hazardous material out of the landfill and preventing fires. Underground fires in landfills occur deep below the landfill surface. Of particular concern with these long-smoldering, underground fires is the fact they tend to smolder for weeks to months at a time.

Currently and to our knowledge, there is not a known battery recycling location in Boundary County. The Solid Waste department does have a lead-acid car battery recycling program with a battery manufacture, but currently they do not have a recycling program for rechargeables. A battery recycling program is planned but there is considerable logistics that must be worked out plus it is a cost to the County. Recycling electric car batteries is a different story and should always be returned to the dealer or manufacture; they CAN NOT be disposed of at the landfill.

For now, bring your rechargeable batteries to the Main Landfill ONLY, not to the Transfer sites. ALL EXPOSED TERMINALS AND/OR WIRES MUST BE TAPED PRIOR TO DISPOSAL AT THE MAIN LANDFILL. If any further questions need to be answered, please contact the Boundary County Solid Waste department.
