Dear Editor,
I am writing to urge voters in the Bonsall Unified School District to pass Measure V and re-elect school board trustee Eric Ortega.
I am a teacher at Sullivan Middle School and my classroom is an old, cramped portable. Over the years, my students and I have experienced pest infestations, inadequate heating and cooling, flickering lights, leaking roofs, and the general disrepair that comes with such conditions. In fact, most teachers at Sullivan are in the same situation. Students struggle to learn when their environment is inadequate, and unfortunately that describes many of our classrooms. My son is a first grader at Bonsall Elementary and last year the kindergarten wing flooded, displacing his class and others for the final months of the school year.
Across the district– from Oceanside to Pala, schools are in desperate need of updates and repairs. Measure V would provide locally-controlled funding to accommodate our growing facilities needs at minimal cost to taxpayers. From science labs to sports, our students and teachers have been forced to “make do” for too long. This year, the state is matching a percentage of funds for any school bonds that pass. Bonsall has not had a bond in twenty years and our facilities are feeling it. Now is the time! Please invest in student success and help improve our learning environments. More information on Measure V can be found at strongbonsallschools.org.
Incumbent trustee Eric Ortega strongly supports Measure V and has demonstrated trusted leadership during his time on the BUSD school board. Mr. Ortega has a true heart for education and is an advocate for fiscal responsibility. Thanks to Mr. Ortega’s leadership, students enjoy more opportunities in sports, the arts, and academics. His integrity and involvement have strengthened relationships between BUSD and the community. Please consider the scope of responsibility that school board trustees bear for ALL stakeholders in our district’s diverse population. Thank you for reading and remember to vote!
Sincerely,
Jenna Murphy
