The Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace and Museum along with Boone County Conservation hosted a Monarch tagging event. We have another free tagging event scheduled for September 2nd from 5:00 - 6:30(Raindate: September. 9th).

The Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace and Museum and Boone County Conservation are teaming up to host a free Monarch tagging event on two different nights at the Birthplace at 709 Carroll St., in Boone. The first night will be Tuesday, August 25th from 5:00 - 6:30 PM(Raindate: August 26th) and the second night will be Wednesday, September 2nd from 5:00 - 6:30 PM(Raindate: September 9th). Please bring your own lawn chairs and bottles of water. We'll have the tags, butterfly nets, coloring sheets, and a Monarch information sheet. We'll record important data on each tagged Monarch, tag number, male or female and wing length. We'll teach you how to do all of those things and we'll be there to help. Then we'll release the tagged butterflies to continue their journey to Mexico. You can check later to see if your tagged butterfly was found in Mexico. Help future generations of Monarchs by planting milkweed at your house so they'll have a source of food.
If these dates don't work for you, the Boone County Conservationist is having a Monarch tagging event at the Don Williams Shelter House on September 1st at 4:30.

We'd like to highlight one of our Mamie docents and she also serves on our Mamie Board of Directors for her recognition for the many hours she volunteers for us giving tours, daily watering and weeding of our gardens, and serving on the Mamie Board, and she also volunteers at IMPACT here in Boone and other organizations for being recognized with the 2026 Governor's Volunteer Award. Thank you Mary Dawkins for all you do in this community.
We really need to have people who are like Mary from Boone and Boone County step up to be tour guides especially on the weekends of September and October to finish out this 2026 season. You can help the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace and Museum out by donating financially or by donating your time to help us maintain the Birthplace. We need volunteer tour guides so we can keep the house open for our visitors from around the World. We especially welcome anyone who would like to give tours on the weekend. We'll train you, give you the information you need, and have you shadow an experienced tour guide before doing it on your own. It is a very rewarding experience to meet people from everywhere who are interested in history and in Mamie's Boone story. If you interested please call 515-432-1896 and leave your contact information and we'll get back to you. Even helping be a tour guide once a month or even once a week would be an amazing help so we can be open for our visitors. "Many hands makes light work." We'd love to have you as part of our team.
Another way to help Mamie's Birthplace is to get an annual or lifetime membership for yourself or someone you know and that would be great way to celebrate our Country's great history and also support the Mamie Eisenhower Birthplace Foundation. Receive free tours during open hours as long as your membership remains active!

We also had two Boone Middle schoolers stop at the house this month and say "They drive by on their scooters all of the time and just wanted to see what was in the house." The docent was already giving a tour to five adults and the boys joined that tour and were genuinely interested in the history of the house. Even taking a selfie with Mamie and Ike's cutout in the museum downstairs. The docent and the 5 out of town adults commented on how well behaved and polite the boys were, so their parents should be proud. Remember Kindergarten through high schoolers can tour the Birthplace for free, we usually ask that they are with a paying adult, but if you too want to find out what's in the house and are genuinely interested in its history we welcome you to stop by for a tour on your own.
We will be open for tours Pufferbilly Days weekend Thursday - Sunday. We'll open on Saturday after the Pufferbilly Days Parade is completed around noon. If you are looking for something in the afternoon to do that weekend while you are in town be sure to stop by. The Mamie Eisenhower Birthplace and Museum Board would like to thank Kruck Plumbing and Heating and Pritchard Brothers Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling for teaming up by installing a new electric water heater in the Birthplace. We have hot water again. Kruck's donated the water heater and Pritchard Brothers donated the installation of the water heater. Just shows what a community can do when they work together for a great cause. Mamie's so appreciates the work these two businesses in town teamed up to do.
Be sure to stop by for a tour this summer. Hours are: Thursday - Saturday 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM and Sunday 1:30 PM - 5:00 PM. That's through the end of October. We look forward to seeing you for a tour. We've already had people from all over the country visit this season. If you are from Boone County and have never been to the museum make a point to visit on our Country's 250th anniversary year. We even had Post Malone stop at the Mamie Eisenhower Birthplace when Ragbrai was in town. Even Mamie's can have a little fun with AI. Thanks to all of the Ragbrai riders who did stop for a tour at the Birthplace. We loved having you visit.

On this date, Mamie Doud and Second Lieutenant Dwight D. Eisenhower were married on July 1, 1916.The ceremony took place at the elegant Doud family home at 750 Lafayette Street in Denver, Colorado, when Mamie was 19 and Dwight was 25. The couple had met the previous year in San Antonio, Texas when the Doud's were at their winter home and Dwight was stationed at Fort Sam Houston, and were engaged on Valentine's Day 1916. Their marriage ultimately spanned over 50 years. This picture was taken before their wedding ceremony in Mamie's parents' home. Ike isn't sitting down for the picture as he had just ironed his military uniform and didn't want to get it wrinkled before their wedding ceremony. This year would mark their 110th wedding anniversary.
