🌻The Gardens of Fog Likely Farm

Some gardens are planned all at once. Others grow slowly over time.

At Fog Likely Farm, flowers spill beside sculpture slowly reclaimed by vines, cast-off metals have been reborn into art, and winding paths lead toward hidden corners, shaded sit-awhiles, workshops, and unexpected discoveries.

No two corners of Fog Likely Farm are alike.

Instead, the farm has evolved year after year into a whimsical and deeply personal landscape shaped over decades by Susie Winters and David Sengel through imagination, work, curiosity, and appreciation for the land. Everywhere you look, the farm reflects the spirit of the people who built it.

The gardens at Fog Likely Farm are an autobiography.

Come see the story unfold.

On June 14th, guests are invited to spend an afternoon wandering the paths, exploring the gardens, listening to music, visiting the studios and galleries, and gathering for conversation, community, and an early supper.

🚜 Fog Likely Farm: A gathering worth making time for.

Dear Friends and fellow Democrats,

In times like these, it matters that we find ways to come together and celebrate each other—to step away for a while and reconnect with what is good and sustaining.

Fog Likely Farm is one of those places.

It’s a place shaped over many years with care, creativity, and a deep sense of purpose. Walking the gardens, sitting under the trees, and spending time there has a way of slowing things down and bringing people back to what matters most—conversation, connection, and a sense of shared place.

On Sunday, June 14, Susie and David are opening their home and farm for a special afternoon—gardens in bloom, working artist studios, music on the porch, and an early supper shared among friends.

Coming together like this isn’t just enjoyable—it’s meaningful. It strengthens community, renews our sense of connection, and reminds us that even now, there is still much that is good.

This kind of time together matters now more than ever. There is something quietly powerful about gathering and remembering what we’re part of. Spending time together like this—grounded, human, and connected—is its own kind of answer to everything pulling us apart in today’s political climate.

This gathering also supports the important work of our local Democratic Party, helping us continue building the kind of community and future we believe in.

If you’re able to attend one event this summer, I hope you’ll consider joining us for this one. I’d love to see you there.

Some places hold stories without trying - like the snowball tree at Fog Likely Farm.

This photograph—taken years ago at Fog Likely Farm—captured something people remembered long after the moment passed.

It later inspired the children’s book "Under the Snowball Tree" by Ellie Kirby.

That same tree still stands.

On June 14, join us as Fog Likely Farm opens for a special event with music, gardens in bloom, art, an early supper, and people gathering beneath the trees.

And you can still sit under the snowball tree.

Made Slowly — inside David Sengel’s studio at Fog Likely Farm

On June 14, visitors to Fog Likely Farm will have a chance to wander the gardens, step inside my studio, and spend an afternoon surrounded by art, music, conversation, and the landscape that has shaped my work for decades.

For more than 45 years, I have lived and worked in the High Country—restoring pianos, building with wood and metal, growing food, and making objects shaped by patience, usefulness, the landscape around me, and sometimes a little humor.

Much of my work begins with materials that already carry a history: weathered wood, discarded metal, worn tools, and found objects. Carving, bleaching, sandblasting and welding are among many techniques that come into play to highlight a piece.

Some pieces carry a message. Some invite reflection. Others simply celebrate form, texture, balance, movement, and the pleasure of things made slowly by hand. I mostly leave it to the viewer to decide what the work says to them personally.

Gardening, farming, music, craftsmanship, and a deep connection to place all find their way into what I make. Over the years, Fog Likely Farm itself has become part workshop, part gathering place, and part inspiration.

At the Fog Likely Farm event, visitors will have a chance to explore my studio and see a unique collection of pieces I’ve created. I’ve also created a special collection of pieces that will be for sale with all proceeds going to the Watauga County Democratic Party.

I look forward to sharing my work—and hearing what you see in it. Over the years, my pieces have been exhibited nationally and are included in museums, galleries, and private collections across the country. The chance to experience my work in the place where it is created feels especially meaningful to me.
