HUGE thanks to the Watauga North Carolina Community Foundation for granting $4,240 to our Remote Food Locker Program in the Bethel School Community.

Last year we purchased over $35,000 in fresh, local food from High Country Food Hub and provided it free of charge to 97 people, including 45 children and 18 seniors! This program was the first of its kind in rural America and we are thrilled to have community wide support as we deliver food to the most rural areas of Watauga County.

“You carry stories that most people will never hear.”

Those words from keynote speaker Renee M. Willis, President and CEO of National Low Income Housing Coalition rang loud and true at ‘Bringing It Home 2026’ — North Carolina’s statewide conference on homelessness.

Our Hospitality House Northwest NC housing team enjoyed two days of education, connection, and camaraderie thanks to conference hosts North Carolina Housing Coalition, NC Department of Health and Human Services and North Carolina Coalition to End Homelessness. This work isn’t easy, especially with the ever-shifting funding landscape, but doing it side-by-side with others who also carry those stories helps to lighten the load.

It was especially wonderful to spend quality and fun times with community partners Jeanie and Casey from OASIS Inc. and Kristy from Helping Hands for Wilkes Homeless.

We’ll end this post with another inspiring nugget from Ms. Willis —

“You are not simply managing homelessness, you are protecting possibility, expanding hope.”

Please join us in welcoming our Summer 2026 interns to Hospitality House! 💙

This summer, we're excited to have students from a variety of majors - including psychology, criminal justice, sociology, public health, and communications - working alongside our staff to support programs serving individuals and families across the Northwest North Carolina.

Our interns will gain hands-on experience in nonprofit operations, homelessness services, advocacy, community engagement, and direct client support while contributing meaningful work to our mission each day.

We are excited to learn from them just as much as they learn from us.

Welcome to the team! 💙

This past week, May 12th, we were once again blessed by Jo Ann Howell Hallmark as she honored the birthday of her late son Jordan Howell Hallmark by baking an exquisitely delicious Hallmark Cakes for the residents of our Brook Hollow Complex in Boone. We remain ever so grateful that Jo Ann chose Hospitality House Northwest NC to keep Jordan's spirit of life, love and giving alive.

Our Food Story continues! Let's celebrate as the Hospitality House Northwest NC Food Pantry was recently awarded the Farm Fresh Nourish Shared Purpose Award by Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC for being part of their Farm Fresh Nourish program since its inception five years ago.

Launched in 2020, Farm Fresh Nourish pairs local farmers with Second Harvest partner pantries to distribute produce shares to pantry patrons who have or live with someone who has prediabetes, diabetes, or heart-related issues such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease.

Prior to this, our Food Pantry achieved the Gold Nourishing Pantry Certification based on client choices for nutritious options, marketing of healthy products, a variety of options for fruits and vegetables, promotion of additional resources, and plans for alternate eating patterns.
