At the Town Council meeting on Monday, May 18, Boonton Mayor Jim Lynch vetoed Ordinance 11-26 after it was approved by the Town Council in a 5โ4 vote.
Ordinance 11-26 would have allowed the town to display a Pride flag at Grace Lord Park during the month of June. The Boonton Democrats supported this initiative as a way for Boontonโs government to show support for the LGBTQIA+ community at a time when many LGBTQIA+ people feel increasingly vulnerable and targeted.
Town Council Member Benjamin Weisman called for a vote to override the veto, but the measure required six votes to pass. The override effort failed when Town Council Members John Meehan, Cy Wikelsky, and Zeke Balan voted to uphold the mayorโs veto.
By vetoing this ordinance, Boonton Republicans disregarded the will of Boonton voters and chose partisan politics over an opportunity to affirm that all residents are welcome in our community.
Thank you to every citizen who spoke or submitted comments at Mondayโs meeting in support of their LGBTQIA+ friends, family members, and neighbors.
We also thank Town Council Members Danielle Cascone, Marie DeVenezia, Luisa Lopez, Kim Mazzei, and Benjamin Weisman for supporting and advocating for the LGBTQIA+ community in Boonton.
