📚 Another school year has started, which means we get to return to one of our favorite parts of public education-teaching Cooper County students about the 911 system!

Did you know Cooper County Joint Communications (CCJC) can-and wants to-visit your school?

We love teaching students what really happens when someone calls 911, from the moment the phone rings to everything happening behind the scenes. Every visit is engaging, age-appropriate, and tailored to the needs of your students.

For younger students, we teach:

• When to call 911
• How to call 911
• What information the dispatcher needs
• Why students should know their address, phone number, and other important information
• Why it is important to remain calm and answer the dispatcher’s questions

For older students, we can explore:

• What happens behind the scenes during a 911 call
• The technology and teamwork used in emergency communications
• Careers in 911 and public-safety communications
• The skills needed to become a telecommunicator
• A hands-on 911 simulator where students can practice taking a fictional emergency call

Dispatchers work closely with law enforcement, fire departments, EMS, emergency management, and other public-safety agencies. Emergency communications is a great place to begin learning about these professions. The Academy will give students an inside look at how dispatch connects and supports every part of an emergency response.

👀 Last month, we told you we had been keeping a secret. Today, we are finally ready to reveal it!

We gave you a few hints:
🎓 It involved our local students.
🚨 It connected the next generation with public safety.
🤝 It was built around education, opportunity, and community.
📞 And it all started right here at CCJC.

Now the secret is out…
🚨 Introducing the Cooper County Joint Communications Future First Responders Academy! 🚨

The CCJC Future First Responders Academy is an educational internship and career-exploration program designed to give local high school students a behind-the-scenes look at:
📞 911 and emergency communications
🚓 Law enforcement
🚒 Fire service
🚑 Emergency medical services
⛈️ Emergency management
💻 Public-safety technology
🤝 Leadership, teamwork, and community service

Students will participate in instruction, simulations, agency presentations, career-development activities, and other hands-on learning experiences.

Students will not independently answer live emergency calls, dispatch live units, or access restricted databases.

Please note: This is an unpaid educational internship and career-exploration program. Participation does not create an employment relationship or guarantee future employment with CCJC or another agency.

Applicants should:
✅ Be at least 16 years old before the Academy begins
✅ Be enrolled in high school
✅ Be in good academic and disciplinary standing
✅ Demonstrate maturity, responsibility, and professionalism
✅ Be able to attend the required Academy sessions
✅ Have reliable transportation
✅ Have parent or guardian permission
✅ Submit a student application and confidential teacher recommendation
✅ Participate in an interview if selected

📣Applications are now open for the first Academy, and the entire process is digital!

📅 Application deadline: September, 14th 2026

Step 1: The student completes the online application, including the short-response questions, 250–400-word essay, and student/parent acknowledgment.

Step 2: The applicant provides the name and email address of a teacher or school professional in the student application.

CCJC will send the confidential recommendation form directly to that individual. The applicant will not have access to the completed recommendation.

Step 3: Qualified applicants will be invited to interview with the Academy Selection Panel.

Step 4: Selected applicants will receive an official acceptance notification and instructions for completing the required enrollment forms.

Acceptance is competitive, and space is limited.
Previous public-safety experience is not required. We are looking for students with integrity, curiosity, dependability, leadership potential, and a willingness to learn.

This is more than a look inside 911. It is an opportunity to explore careers, build confidence, develop professional skills, and discover what it means to serve your community.

The secret is finally out, and we cannot wait to meet the first class of future public-safety leaders!

As our community celebrates Independence Day, our dispatchers will be here ready to answer your call when an emergency happens.

Knowing when to call 911 helps keep emergency lines available for those who need immediate assistance.

🚨 Call 911 if:

✅ Someone has a serious illness or injury.
✅ There is a fire or explosion.
✅ A crime is happening now or has just occurred.
✅ There is an immediate threat to someone’s life or property.
✅ You are involved in a serious traffic crash with injuries or other immediate hazards.

📞 Use the non-emergency number for:

• Noise complaints
• Suspicious activity that is not an immediate emergency
• Property concerns that are not currently putting anyone in danger
• General law enforcement assistance

🎇 Fireworks Reminder

Please do not call 911 for fireworks complaints unless someone’s life or property is in immediate danger.

Examples of emergencies include:
🔥 A fire caused by fireworks.
🚑 Someone who has been seriously injured.
🏠 Fireworks creating an immediate threat to a home, business, or other property.

If fireworks are simply being used nearby and there is no immediate danger, please use the appropriate non-emergency number listed above.

Remember, if you’re ever unsure whether a situation is an emergency, don’t hesitate to call 911. We’d rather help you determine the appropriate response than have you delay during a true emergency.
