The Upper Chichester Fire Departments regrets to announce the passing of Jerry Gaspero.

Jerry joined the Reliance Fire Company in 1990 and was a life member. Jerry was a man of many hats and he wore them all proudly. At the time of his passing, he served as Treasurer for the Fire Company and Relief Association. Jerry also held the positions of President and Trustee during his tenure.

Jerry was also a member of the Upper Chichester Township Fire Police where he remained active up until his passing.

He was a constant fixture at every Fire Company event and would always great you with a smile. He was the true definition of a friend and would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it.

A viewing and funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 15th, 2020 at Pagano Funeral Home in Garnet Valley, PA. The viewing will be held from 9:30am-11:00am followed by the memorial service.

We ask that you keep his Wife Donna, Son Guilio and their family in your thoughts and prayers.

** PRESS RELEASE **

The three Volunteer Fire Departments (Boothwyn, Ogden, and Reliance) in Upper Chichester Township have been working on a solution to address the ever increasing need to meet the manpower demands of operating in a safe and efficient manner and with the goal of improving emergency services to the community. In an attempt to accomplish this objective, the Chief Officers are experimenting with operating out of one central location, at this time being Boothwyn Fire Company.

Responders will report to this central location where fire apparatus of each of the Fire Companies will be located. This will become effective on August 3rd. In the time leading to this date, cross training has been occurring so that familiarity with each other’s equipment and operations can result in a smooth transition with maximum effectiveness. Further to build upon the team concept, Delaware County Emergency Services has agreed to dispatch the Upper Chichester Fire Departments under a singular Company Number of “10.”

During the trial period, this approach will be evaluated to insure that coverage is adequately maintained and response time not impacted. In addition, retention of the current volunteers will be paramount and recruitment will remain a focused initiative. We appreciate the support the Public has given us in the past and during this time of challenge for Volunteers that you continue to acknowledge our value in making Upper Chichester Township a better, safer place.

We will post our new page in the coming days. So stayed tuned for more updates.

You may hear our sirens! The purpose of the sirens are to alert the Volunteer Fire Department members of an emergency. While we rely on other forms of communication such as pagers and cell phones, they have their short comings. Batteries die, pagers and cell phones are not on the person, text messaging and smart phone apps like Active 911 could be delayed, with some calls not coming through at all. The National Fire Protection Association recommends that there are at least 2 reliable means to alert firefighters. The siren gets the firefighters attention at any time.

It says to everyone, somebody needs help! When people in town hear the sirens, it tells them there’s an emergency going on somewhere and it helps with traffic. It warns citizens to be alert for volunteers responding to the firehouse and to watch out for fire trucks responding to an incident. When it’s your time of emergency, a siren reassures you that help is on the way!

Like the distance to the closest fire hydrant, fire sirens also help with the cost of homeowner’s insurance, counting as points toward a better score on an Insurance Services Office evaluation. The higher the score given to the fire department, the lower the insurance costs to the homeowner!
