She was sworn in on January 5, 2023, becoming the first woman and first openly LGBTQ+ person elected Governor in Massachusetts history. Healey was elected Massachusetts Attorney General in 2014 and re-elected in 2018. As the People’s Lawyer, she took on the issues that impact residents across Massachusetts, including the opioid epidemic, the climate crisis, escalating health care costs, and studen

t loan debt. Healey grew up the oldest of five siblings in an old farm house in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire. Healey attended Harvard College, where she captained the basketball team, and then spent two years as a 5’4” starting point guard on a professional basketball team in Austria. Governor Healey and Lieutenant Governor Driscoll are building an experienced, diverse team that is focused on bringing people together and delivering results for Massachusetts residents. They believe that Massachusetts has the greatest collection of human and intellectual capital, business, innovation, and know-how in the world. They are harnessing these resources to deliver for residents, families, and businesses throughout the entire state.

Today, Joanna Lydgate and I joined families, advocates, and members of the recovery community on Boston Common to plant more than 20,000 purple flags honoring lives lost to overdose.

Behind every flag is someone’s child, parent, partner, sibling, or friend—a person who was deeply loved and is deeply missed. Massachusetts has made progress, but every life lost is one too many.

We honor those we’ve lost by turning remembrance into action: fighting stigma, expanding treatment and recovery, making lifesaving resources more accessible, and doing everything we can to prevent the next overdose.

We’re grateful to advocates like Nichol Brewer-Lowry of Native American LifeLines and so many others who meet people and families where they are with trusted, compassionate support.

To every family grieving a loved one: We see you, we stand with you, and we will keep fighting for you. To everyone in recovery: We are proud of you and here for you. To anyone struggling today: There is help. There is hope.

When Donald Trump cuts research funding, the consequences are real. Clinical trials are halted. Patients are left waiting. Researchers lose their jobs. And lifesaving breakthroughs are left on the table.

Massachusetts knows what’s at stake. , , and and I are calling for action to protect the research, jobs, and discoveries that power our economy. I filed the DRIVE Act to help get this done — but Massachusetts can’t do it alone.
