Senator Jake Oliveira

Senator Jake Oliveira 20-year Public Servant. State Senator for the Hampden, Hampshire & Worcester District. Jake’s grandfather Bolac Bastek helped to build the Quabbin reservoir.

Jake Oliveira is the great-grandson of immigrants from Portugal and Poland who settled in Ludlow, Springfield, and Palmer. They worked in the Ludlow Mills and built strong roots in Western Massachusetts. Growing up, Jake’s dad Rich worked in management for an engineering company, and his mom Carol worked as a secretary and was a member of the Teamsters union. Jake’s dad was laid off when Jake was

8 years old, and he returned to school to become a teacher. While those times weren’t easy for his family, they survived by sticking to the values of family, community, and hard work. Jake’s dad became a Math teacher and went on to teach at Palmer and Ludlow High Schools. Jake was educated entirely through the public education system. He is a third-generation Ludlow High School graduate (Class of ‘04) and an alumnus of Framingham State University. While at Framingham State, Oliveira served three years as an elected member of the campus Board of Trustees. He was a student member of the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education, which sets policy for the state’s colleges and universities. As a student leader, Jake was a founding member of PHENOM - the Public Higher Education Network of Massachusetts, which advocates for higher education at the State House. Jake was elected to the Ludlow School Committee in 2009 and served on the body for 12 years. He has distinguished himself as a fierce advocate for public education. He has persistently fought for educational equity. He also serves as Ludlow’s representative to the Lower Pioneer Valley Educational Collaborative, which provides the district’s vocational programs and student transportation for seven school districts. In 2016, Jake was elected the youngest-ever President of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees. As President, Jake partnered with school committee members across Massachusetts to lead the fight against expanding charter schools without local approval. Jake was a member of the Governor’s Local Government Advisory Committee, meeting monthly with the Governor or Lieutenant Governor to discuss issues impacting cities and towns in Massachusetts. At the national level, Oliveira has represented the eleven Northeastern states on the National School Boards Association’s board of directors since 2015. Through these roles, Jake has become a leader at the local, regional, state, and national levels. In his professional career, Jake served as the Assistant Executive Officer of the Massachusetts State Universities Council of Presidents, representing the interests of the nine state universities. While at the Council of Presidents, Jake helped implement the legislative strategy that changed the name of seven of the then-state colleges to state universities.

Jake understands the workings and power dynamics of the State House. Early in his career, he served as budget director for Michael Rodrigues, who is now the Chair of the Senate Ways & Means Committee. Jake chaired the Ludlow Democratic Town Committee for over 10 years and served as an elected Ludlow Town Meeting member (2005-2009). He is also a former eighth-grade CCD teacher. Jake lives on East Street in Ludlow, next door to his grandmother Lena Oliveira.

The Massachusetts State Senate's FY27 budget is about investing in people, communities, and opportunities across Massachusetts.

I'm proud to have secured more than $2 million in funding for Western Mass to support early childhood education, youth programming, veterans services, mental health care, public safety, literacy initiatives, workforce development, healthy aging programs, and community organizations serving residents throughout our region.

More than $2 million is being invested in western Mass.

Massachusetts, like much of the country, is facing a growing shortage of obstetricians and gynecologists, creating challenges for patients seeking timely access to care.

During budget week, I had the opportunity to meet with members of the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists - ACOG to discuss the workforce challenges facing providers across the Commonwealth and the steps the Legislature can take to strengthen and expand access to women's health care.

Thank you to ACOG for the conversation and for their continued advocacy on behalf of patients and providers.

Honoring constituents for their noteworthy accomplishments is always a pleasure, but it is extra special when I have the opportunity to honor a former classmate. Coach John Pantuosco has been teaching and coaching for 42 years. This past year, he was honored as the MIAA Coach of the Year for Boys Outdoor Track & Field, in recognition of his many years of coaching an extremely successful team who have won Western Mass Championships numerous times, including the past 5 seasons. Thank you, Coach, for your dedication, leadership, and positive impact on student athletes.

As an added bonus, Senator Oliveira and I were able to meet with the many athletes who will be competing in the State Championships tomorrow, as well as some special alums who had come to say hi to their former coach. Best of luck to all of the athletes competing tomorrow!

This week, more than 200 students from 30 schools across Massachusetts came to the MassMutual Center to present thoughtful, well-researched projects on issues impacting their schools and communities, from artificial intelligence and substance use recovery to social media literacy, athletics, and school policy.

It was great to serve as a judge and engage with so many talented young people who are already making their voices heard. When students are encouraged to participate in civic life and included in conversations about the future of their schools and communities, we all benefit.

Thank you to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the educators, organizers, and students who made the showcase possible.

Senator Oliveira and I couldn’t let the school year end without recognizing some exceptional athletes at Longmeadow High School. Emersynn Cage scored more than 1,220 points in her 4-years as a starter on the LHS Varsity Girls’ Basketball Team. She accomplished this feat despite an injury her sophomore year, which makes this even more remarkable. Emersynn was named Western Mass Player of the Year by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and will be playing for Westfield State next year. Go Fighting Owls!

We were also able to recognize 4 incredible swimmers who earned gold medals at the MIAA Division I State Championship meet for Girls’ Swimming. Liliah Doherty won gold in two individual events - 50 Yard Freestyle, 100 Yard Butterfly, and was joined by Emilia Szyluk, Chloe Anderson, and Izabella Strebel to place first in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay. Best of luck to Lilah as she swims for the University of New Hampshire next year!

The talent and dedication displayed by these athletes is only matched by the enthusiasm and support of their teammates 😊 The LHS Girls’ Lacrosse Team were there to congratulate their swimming teammates on their accomplishments. Best wishes to all of these amazing athletes!

For too long, too many connected to the Belchertown State School were forgotten and denied the dignity they deserved.

Last week, it was a privilege to speak at the annual memorial service at Warner Pine Grove Cemetery alongside DDS staff, families, friends, and advocates committed to ensuring those buried there are remembered and honored with dignity.

Thank you to the Department of Developmental Services, to Kate Benson and the Belchertown State School Friends Association, and everyone who continues this important work of remembrance and advocacy.

Together, we remember them.

Our community is mourning yet another profound loss with the passing of Henry Thomas III.

Henry dedicated his life to uplifting others, helping shape opportunities for generations through education, workforce development, youth empowerment, and community advocacy. His impact extended far beyond Springfield through his work with the National Urban League and his revival of Camp Atwater, preserving a historic institution that has empowered youth for generations.

I remember when I served as a student member of the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education, Henry was incredibly welcoming and supportive. As a young person stepping into those spaces, his kindness, encouragement, and willingness to make others feel valued left a lasting impression on me. I will always be grateful for the way he treated me.

My thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and all those mourning this tremendous loss.

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance, a time to honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation and to reflect on the cost of the freedoms we enjoy every day.

Thank you to the Veterans Service Officers, veterans organizations, volunteers, and community members who dedicated their time and effort to organizing Memorial Day ceremonies across our communities. Your commitment ensures these sacrifices are honored with the dignity and respect they deserve.

Today, I join many across Springfield and the Commonwealth in mourning the passing of Ben Swan, a giant in the fight for civil rights and a lifelong advocate for justice and equality.

From marching alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to serving our communities here in Massachusetts, Ben Swan dedicated his life to ensuring that others had a voice and a seat at the table.

I remember being present at the naming of Ben Swan Way in Mason Square in 2022 and hearing the incredible stories that recognized a life of service and sacrifice that helped shape our community for the better. It was an honor.

May he rest in peace, and may we continue the work he spent a lifetime advancing.
