National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness

National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness NSCAHH organizes college students to end hunger and homelessness through education, service, and advocacy.

Every American ought to be able to live without worrying whether they’ll have food on their plate or a roof over their head. And yet, last year more than 49 million Americans were at risk of suffering from hunger, and 3.5 million ended up sleeping in parks, under bridges, in shelters, or in cars. The combination of the high cost of living, low-wage jobs, unemployment, and underemployment only make

these problems worse, and force countless Americans to choose between food, housing, and other critical expenses. We have the resources and knowledge to eliminate hunger and homelessness in our time, but it remains to be seen whether we have the political will to provide a real support system that ensures everyone has access to food and shelter. These problems will only continue to get worse unless we lend a hand to those in immediate need, while at the same time creating meaningful solutions to end hunger and homelessness in America. Fortunately, on campuses across the country, there are students like us who are dedicated to making their communities a better place, and improving the lives and well-being of those around them. That’s where the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness comes in. We take this passion and dedication and harness it through a combination of direct service, fundraising events, and political advocacy. As students, we have the ideas, solutions and resources to make change – and by joining together across the country, we can end hunger and homelessness in America.

Legislators introduced The College Student Hunger Act on Wednesday that would enable more low-income college students to access the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and increase awareness of the program.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Rep. Al Lawson (D-Fla.) introduced legislation Wednesday to tackle food insecurity on college campuses.

“If we look at student success, and we focus on student success and graduation, our number one goal is to get them across the finish line – and if we cannot get them nourishment, we can't help them succeed and across the finish line. For many of our students, the question is, do I buy a textbook or food?”

Spending 10 or 12 hours on University of Michigan-Dearborn's campus each day isn't unusual for Sara Alqaragholy, a senior studying urban and regional studies.

“While hundreds of universities have opened food pantries since 2009, made it into the national conversation much more recently. A reckoning that began with student activism has now led to policy changes, due in part to national attention from lawmakers—and increasing demand for programs that go beyond establishing food pantries for hungry students.”

As more students search for their next meal, there's increasing demand for programs that go beyond the food pantry.

“Tuition, fees, and other costs associated with attending college exceed the financial means of many students. As a result, students have to prioritize their available budget for rent, tuition, and utilities, while using the remaining insufficient balance for food.”

About 19 percent of respondents were identified as food insecure, lacking consistent access to nutritious food, while another 25 percent experienced anxiety about food shortage. Through this work, UF/IFAS researchers found that food insecure students are also at a higher risk of experiencing stress,...

With the rising cost of college, college students are having to choose between tuition or a meal.

Many routinely skip meals and take ‘poverty naps’ because they cannot afford groceries. Campus food pantries are helping, but are they enough?
