Freedom House joins our community in mourning the passing of Yhinny Matos, a devoted community advocate whose service touched the lives of countless young people and families.

Yhinny represented the very heart of community leadership. She gave her time, energy, knowledge, and care to building opportunities, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring that young people had the support they needed to move forward. Her work was not simply a profession. It was an expression of her deep commitment to the community she served.

Our neighborhoods are strengthened by people like Yhinny, people who work faithfully, advocate fiercely, mentor generously, and continue showing up even when the work is difficult. Their contributions are woven into the programs they helped build, the doors they helped open, and the young lives they encouraged.

We extend our deepest condolences to Yhinny’s son, her family, friends, colleagues, and the many community members who loved and respected her. We honor her life, her service, and the lasting impact of her work.

May we remember Yhinny not only with our words, but by continuing the work of supporting young people and strengthening the community she loved so deeply.

For the past four summers, Freedom House has partnered with Children’s Services of Roxbury (CSR) and Beats, Rhymes & Life (BRL) to provide our young people with an opportunity to explore music, creativity, and self-expression.

Programs like BRL are important because young people need more than academic and career opportunities. They need spaces to discover their interests, develop their talents, build confidence, and simply be creative. They need opportunities to try something new and to have their voices taken seriously.

This is also why partnerships matter. No single organization can meet every need of the young people we serve. When organizations bring their strengths and resources together, we are able to offer young people experiences that are richer, broader, and more meaningful.

Four summers later, we remain grateful for our partnership with CSR and BRL and for the continued investment in Boston’s young people and our communities. ❤️

Good Morning Freedom House Family 🫶🏾

There’s something powerful about learning together, showing up together, and being willing to step outside of your comfort zone. Growth doesn’t always look like having all the answers; it looks like being present, being curious, asking questions, trying something new, and trusting yourself along the way.

As Issa Rae reminds us, “You can’t be afraid to fail. It’s the only way you succeed.” Failure isn’t the opposite of success; sometimes it’s the classroom that teaches us how to get there. So today, take the risk, speak up, try again, and give yourself permission to figure it out along the way.

As we look back on an unforgettable summer, we’re reminded that the best part was never just the activities; it was the smiles, friendships, confidence, new experiences, and memories our scholars created along the way. From learning and growing to laughing, exploring, and simply being themselves, this summer gave our young people space to shine.

Venus Williams said, “Just believe in yourself. Even if you don’t, just pretend that you do and, at some point, you will.”
