City of Quincy

City of Quincy The official page of the City of Quincy, Massachusetts. Quincy is a city in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. Quincy became a city in 1888.

It is a major part of Metropolitan Boston and is Boston's immediate southern suburb. It is the 8th largest city in the state. Known as the "City of Presidents," Quincy is the birthplace of two U.S. presidents โ€” John Adams and his son John Quincy Adams โ€” as well as John Hancock, a President of the Continental Congress and the first signer of the Declaration of Independence. First settled in 1625, Q

uincy was briefly part of Dorchester and Boston before becoming the north precinct of Braintree in 1640. In 1792, Quincy was split off from Braintree; the new town was named after Colonel John Quincy, maternal grandfather of Abigail Adams and after whom John Quincy Adams was also named. For more than a century, Quincy was home to a thriving granite industry; the city was also the site of the Granite Railway, the United States' first commercial railroad. Shipbuilding at the Fore River Shipyard was another key part of the city's economy. In the 20th century, both Howard Johnson's and Dunkin' Donuts were founded in the city.

The City of Quincy Election Department is proud to announce the implementation of new multilingual translation software. The addition of this software reflects the Election Departmentโ€™s ongoing dedication to improving voter experience, expanding access and embracing innovative solutions that benefit the diverse Quincy community.

Working in partnership with Inclusion Solutions, the Election Department has equipped recycled iPads from previously used electronic Poll Pads with innovative software capable for translating 88 different languages, including Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Vietnamese, Spanish, Portuguese, and many
commonly spoken within our community. By repurposing existing iPads from retired Poll Pad systems, the City was able to significantly reduce costs, purchasing only the software rather than entirely new devices. This cost-effective approach allowed Quincy to expand accessibility while responsibly utilizing existing technology resources.

Quincy is launching a new School Bus Safety Program to help protect students and make our streets safer. As of June 1, school buses have been equipped with stop-arm cameras that help deter illegal passing of stopped busesโ€”a dangerous behavior that puts children at risk.

The program includes a 30-day warning period to educate drivers, with enforcement beginning July 1. By improving driver awareness and accountability, this initiative helps create safer school commutes for Quincy students and greater peace of mind for families.

Notice from Quincy Elections Department

On June 1, 2026, the City of Quincy was required by law to designate voters as inactive if an annual census was not returned. As a result, 22,286 voters were moved to inactive status.

Inactive voters may return to active status at any time by completing an Affirmation of Current and Continuous Residence, submitting a new voter registration form, or providing a signed confirmation of their current address to the Election Department, under penalty of perjury. All inactive voters will receive a postcard in the mail with the opportunity to return to active status.

Being inactive does NOT remove your right to vote, but it is important to update your status to ensure your voter information is current. Maintaining active status helps avoid delays at the polls.

Check your voter status by visiting: www.sec.state.ma.us/OVR/ or by calling (617)-376-1144. To learn more about inactive voting, visit: [www.sec.state.ma.us/divisions/elections/voting-information/inactive-voters.htm]www.sec.state.ma.us/divisions/elections/voting-information/inactive-voters.htm

From Vacant Office Space to Vibrant Community: A New Vision for Crown Colony

Today, Mayor Tom Koch, Atlantic Development and Atlantic Management, announced plans to transform a vacant 240,000-square-foot office building at 1600 Crown Colony Drive into a new 315-unit, 55+ condominium community.

As office vacancies continue to challenge communities across Greater Boston, Quincy is taking a proactive approach to reimagining underutilized properties, creating housing opportunities, generating jobs, and strengthening the City's tax base.

The project is expected to create approximately 100 construction jobs, new permanent positions upon completion, and generate more than $2.5 million annually in property tax revenue.
