Last week 32 people representing 12 communities and 5 organizations gathered at the Mary D. Stone School Apartments in Auburn to tour an affordable housing development and learn how they can support similar housing in their own communities.

Karmen Cheung, Regional VP at Pennrose Companies, led attendees on a tour of the apartments, which were developed by Pennrose and received permanent financing from MHP. Two households also graciously opened their doors, giving attendees a firsthand look at their affordable homes and an opportunity to hear directly from the residents.

Following the tour, MHP Senior Program Manager Shelly Goehring shared an introduction to affordable housing trusts. Participants considering whether a trust could be good for their community were able to ask questions and learn from communities that already have one in place.

Join us in welcoming Olabanji Dodo to MHP! 🎉

As a program analyst, Olabanji supports data management, analysis, and reporting across MHP’s homeownership programs and collaborates with teams across the organization to strengthen data-driven decision-making and improve processes.

Prior to joining MHP, Olabanji worked as an Outreach Coordinator at Community Partners of South Florida, where he supported community engagement initiatives and programs serving families and underserved communities. He has also gained experience in business analytics through projects with Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs, applying data analysis and visualization to support business strategy and operational decision-making.

We’re so excited to have him on our team. Welcome, Olabanji!

Yesterday, Governor Maura Healey announced a new $5 million investment to make it easier and more affordable to build Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) across Massachusetts.

The new Community ADU Pilot Program will help housing developers build more rental homes, while additional assistance for homeowners and updated regulations will make it easier and more affordable to build ADUs.

Administered by MHP and funded by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities, the program is expected to support the construction of 20 to 30 affordable ADUs.

“MHP is proud to partner with the Healey-Driscoll Administration to make housing more affordable across the Commonwealth,” said MHP Executive Director Rachel Heller. “Making ADUs possible statewide was a critical milestone. Now we need to help homeowners and affordable housing developers turn that opportunity into homes. Hundreds of households are already getting the technical assistance they need through the Feasibility Study Provider program. Building on that momentum, our new ADU Affordable Housing Developer Pilot will help expand long-term affordable housing options for families across Massachusetts.”

🔸 Honoring the past while investing in the future.🔸

Yesterday in Athol, we joined NewVue Communities, Congressman Jim McGovern, State Senator Jo Comerford, State Representative Susannah Whipps, and state and local partners to celebrate the grand opening of Residences at the Park.

This development exemplifies creative adaptive reuse, breathing new life into two historic school buildings. The Ellen Bigelow and Riverbend schools have been transformed into 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom apartments that will be home to 53 mixed-income households. Two of the apartments are Community-based Housing for individuals with disabilities.

MHP is proud to provide a permanent loan and Workforce Housing funding to support this transformative project.

MHP organizes housing roundtables to give trust members and Community Preservation Committees the opportunity to experience affordable homes and learn how they can support similar housing in their communities.

We'll start at 5:30 p.m. with a tour of the Mary D. Stone Apartments led by Karmen Cheung, Regional Vice President at Pennrose Companies. At 6:15 p.m. we'll begin our roundtable discussion.

At our recent all-staff meeting, we celebrated our Managing Director Mark Curtiss for 35 years at MHP. Colleagues praised Mark’s creative, committed, caring, and calm leadership style, and for making space for everyone at the table. And notably, many MHP staff members attribute Mark for being the reason they’re at MHP.

Mark is responsible for managing MHP’s $1.5 billion multifamily loan fund, including oversight of program development, loan underwriting, loan origination, portfolio management, and capital sources. Additionally, he is the architect of MHP’s rental housing loan programs including permanent financing, green and healthy financing, lines of credit, and credit enhancement for tax-exempt bonds, and he is directly responsible for the growth of the loan fund from its inception to over 26,000 units financed with no loan losses in the history of the portfolio.

He also serves as a director of the National Association of Affordable Housing Lenders, which represents leading banks and nonprofit loan funds across the U.S. engaged in community development lending.

We’re grateful for Mark's leadership and proud to celebrate this milestone.

Applications for our Complete Neighborhoods technical assistance program are now open!

This program supports efforts by the Healey-Driscoll Administration and state legislature to build more homes near transit, jobs, and services. Municipalities and developers can apply to receive up to $50,000 in technical assistance to advance the production of affordable housing in densely developed areas, or areas near transit nodes and mobility infrastructure.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
