Join us in welcoming Ashley Eaton, our new Senior Planner!

Ashley brings more than a decade of experience helping communities advance their housing priorities. Prior to MHP, Ashley worked as a Neighborhood Planner in the City of New Bedford, where she focused on a variety of neighborhood stabilization and revitalization efforts. She also worked as a Land Use Planner at the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission, where she supported cities and towns across the region with planning efforts focused on housing production, zoning review and revisions, and climate resiliency/hazard mitigation.

As Senior Planner, Ashley will play a central part on the Community Assistance team, contributing to the Complete Neighborhoods Partnership program, the Chapter 40B Project Eligibility Letter process, and ongoing collaboration with municipal staff, regional planning agencies, and other local and state partners

We are so excited to have her on our team. Welcome, Ashley! 🎉

Thanks to Julie Klump at Preservation of Affordable Housing for hosting a tour of their Deep Energy Retrofit projects in Salem as part of the Housing Partnership Network Spring Member Meeting. The tour included a look at their completed Salem Heights rehab, as well as a peek at the design approach for the Salem Fairweather project, an awardee of the Climate Ready Housing program.

Climate Ready Housing is a program of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities. MHP, LISC Massachusetts, and MassHousing administer the program on behalf of HLC.

We loved visiting the City of Boston, Mayor's Office of Housing's ADU Showcase at City Hall Plaza last week! Featuring a fully-furnished model ADU from Backyard ADUs, the showcase gave hundreds of people the opportunity to step inside an ADU, many for the first time.

We had fun running into our friends from Citizens' Housing and Planning Association, Inc. CHAPA and catching up with Paige Roosa, Director of the Mayor's Housing Innovation Lab. Thanks for having us! 🏡

Stay tuned for more on the ADU front from MHP. We're excited to launch our ADU Incentive Program soon!

MHP mourns the loss of former Massachusetts congressman Barney Frank, who was a stalwart supporter of MHP, both publicly and privately, throughout his time serving in Congress. His work on a landmark federal interstate banking law in 1994 preserved a successful partnership between MHP and Massachusetts banks that has financed nearly 30,000 units of affordable rental housing.

Congressman Frank also shared MHP’s view that banks and other financial institutions should have “skin in the game” when providing home mortgages and other financial products. As chair of the House Financial Services Committee, he built that requirement into the Dodd-Frank Act following the 2008 national financial crisis, and MHP’s ONE Mortgage program was later cited by federal banking regulators as a successful example of retained risk.

It’s often been said that banks can do well by doing good. Barney Frank did as much as any other elected official in the last half century to put that philosophy into practice. We were proud to work with him.

MHP is saddened to learn of the passing of Connie Kruger, our former MHP colleague, Amherst housing advocate, Housing Hero, and friend. Connie's devotion to affordable housing helped to provide homes for countless families, both in her own town of Amherst and across the state. Connie served in many roles in Amherst over the years to encourage housing, including town planner, planning board member, select board member, Amherst Housing Authority commissioner and Amherst Affordable Housing Trust board member.

In her time at MHP from 2002 to 2010, Connie provided technical assistance to numerous communities and created and organized the first five MHP Housing Institute conferences, now in its 19th year and having trained thousands of local officials and advocates since her pivotal role. In 2016, MHP honored her with a Housing Hero Award of her own to recognize and celebrate the deep impact she has had. We will miss her dearly.

The Amherst Current put together a touching tribute to Connie, which includes remembrances from many community leaders who worked with her over the years. Meet the Exceptional Standard ADU winner of the ADU Design Challenge: Sunlit Haven by Yiren Weng of Sharon.

This 785-square-foot, one-bedroom design includes a den and outdoor deck, creating room for flexibility within a standard ADU footprint. Judges praised the open entry, central flex space, clear graphics and cost-effectiveness.

Under the Affordable Homes Act, ADUs under 900 square feet can now be built by right in single-family zoning districts statewide. Sunlit Haven shows how that flexibility can help families create homes that support changing household needs while making better use of existing residential lots.
