Blue Hills Parkway was constructed in 1894 and was one of the first connecting parkways in the Boston area designed by noted landscape architect, Charles Eliot, an associate of the Olmsted Brothers. Today the Parkway serves as a gateway to the Blue Hills Reservation in Milton on the south and the Neponset River Reservation and Boston on the north. The Parkway is under the care of the Massachusetts
Department of Conservation and Recreation and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2003. The Friends of Blue Hills Parkway is a volunteer group dedicated to working with the DCR, the Town of Milton, area legislators, and other neighborhood groups to preserve and enhance Milton’s historic roadway for present and future generations. The group works to educate the community on issues related to the Parkway and its natural, residential, and recreational uses. We view the Parkway in the context of Boston urban landscape history, the Neponset River Watershed, and Milton’s local history. Our wish is to safeguard the overall green and residential nature of the neighborhood and increase its value as a gateway asset to the Town of Milton and the Blue Hills Reservation.
